Neko Case at Governors Ball Music Festival 2014

Looking for this season's 'festival style?' It's not only festivalgoers who experiment; some of this summer's best looks can be seen on stage. Neko Case, who performed at last weekend's Governors Ball on Randalls Island, explained her style inspiration.

Describe what you're wearing and what your favorite piece is.

A Loteria thrift-store tee with cut-off sleeves, a pair of skeleton pants I bought for three bucks at a pop-up Halloween store blowout sale, and my favorite: my Vans 'Number of the Beast' Iron Maiden shoes.

How much of a role do your clothes play in your performances?

More now than they used to. I was always too shy to dress up, but the more confident I have become (took long enough), the more I enjoy it. There is also the logistics of business at my mid-level that take up so much of my energy, I often fail to plan. I have been trying to fix that. Dressing up is a good time!

What's one thing that you always pack when going to festivals?

My teenage bad-girl ratting comb that Hogan gave me. I don't leave home without it.

Do you dress differently for festivals than for concerts or small venues? If so, why?

Only if there is a weather issue. I'm not much of a dress-gal to begin with, so it usually just means an extra layer on top.

What inspires your overall style?

Practicality, comfort, oddness, ambiguity. My style Icons are Cathrine Ringer of the French pop band Les Rita Mitsouko and Grace Jones. They can both be a lady and a dude and all manner of freaky inbetween. They are powerful and brave. They actually make me swoon.

Tell us about one memorable style moment while you've performed.

I dressed up like Adam Ant for Halloween. I make a mock naked-guy chest complete with sewn-on nipples and hair. I don't think I've ever felt so in my element!

But if you work a 9-to-5 office job (and you're not this person) chances are, you don't get to experience all the joys of summer every single day.
