Bring together a host of famous musicians and musical acts from the 1960s through 1990s, add award-winning barbecue ribs and 125 visual artists, and what do you have?
You've got the first Huntington Beach Food, Art & Music Festival, running Friday through Sunday at Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard, across from the Hyatt Regency Resort.
The lineup reads like a who's who of classic rock: Jefferson Starship; members of Toto, Loverboy, Kansas, Chicago, Night Ranger and Survivor; Don Dokken; Al Stewart; Gary Wright; Missing Persons; David Pack of Ambrosia; Jack Russell of Great White; and Blues Traveler's John Popper.
Other performers will include Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, Sheila E., Dramarama, Gin Blossoms, Michelle Branch, Pablo Cruise and the Conan O'Brien show band.
'It started with a couple artists, and they started talking to their friends,' said Jay Freeman, founder of the Huntington Beach Food, Art & Music Festival. 'It really just started to grow. It's all relationship-based. The bigger this thing got, the more people wanted to be a part of it.'
This festival will also feature plenty of ribs. National award-winning barbecue rib teams will be coming straight from the BBQ Championships in Reno, which were held over Labor Day weekend. The teams represent more than 10 states and Canada.
Also, a flurry of food trucks will be camped out at the festival, serving up their greasy goodness.
If that weren't enough, about 125 artists, selected through an extensive juried process, will showcase a wide variety of talents and media, including painting, jewelry, woodworking and photography.
Plenty of local artists will be represented, including a large group associated with the Huntington Beach Art Center, which is a sponsor, and folks from Laguna Beach, Manhattan Beach and other parts of Southern California.
'The call for artists started six months ago,' Freedman said. 'We've partnered with the Huntington Beach Art Center. They've been absolutely wonderful in supporting this.'
STARS EXCITED TO PLAY TOGETHER
The backing all-star band is going to look different each day. On Saturday, Popper and members of TV host O'Brien's band will form the core in the afternoon. On Sunday, a group of seasoned musicians led by Pack will be joined by Bobby Kimball of Toto, Mike Reno of Loverboy, Kelly Keagy of Night Ranger, Jim Peterik of Survivor, Dave Jenkins of Pablo Cruise and Bill Champlin of Chicago. Other surprise performers are anticipated.
Sugar Ray lead singer and TV personality McGrath is looking forward to the event, and specifically, his show on Saturday.
'What a great bill to be a part of,' said McGrath, 46, who grew up in Newport Beach. 'Adding the food element, having this diverse music. This will really be one of those great seminal things we're going to remember for the rest of our lives.'
McGrath said he's going to perform some new, recent songs. But he definitely won't forget the hits, such as 'Fly' and 'Every Morning.'
