Olive Branch hosts Crawfish Music Festival on Saturday

The second annual Crawfish Music Festival will support the victims of tornadoes that recently hit North Mississippi.

'Every dollar we make will go to the tornado victims,' said Dave Young with the South Branch Lions Club, organizers of the May 31 event in Olive Branch.

The day's festivities begin at 3 p.m. Admission is free until 5 p.m., when $10 per adult will be charged. Children 12 and under attend for free.

The festival was moved from the outskirts of the city to Old Towne this year. The event will feature carnival food, cold beverages, children's games, arts and crafts and, of course, boiled crawfish.

Up to 10,000 pounds of crawfish will be cooked. Young says it's 'an acquired taste.'

'Crawfish to me are freshwater shrimp,' he said. 'They're a delicacy.'

Known also as crawdads, crayfish and mudbugs, they are largest in early spring, when their shells also are soft.

Entertainment will include the Bryan Hayes Band, Lafayette, Cajun musicians Trent Lejeune & Doubletime, and recording artist Brian Randle from Nashville.

Randle, whose song '200 Proof' is a recent Internet hit, described crawfish as 'my favorite food in the world.'

Lions Club, an international service organization that supports a number of environmental and health issues, will offer free basic eye exams at its tent. Anyone who may need eye glasses will get a referral to an optometrist. Lions often help pay for glasses when insurance or private resources won't suffice, Young said.

Pigeon Roost Road will be blocked off for the event. Seating should be brought from home, but no coolers or outside food will be permitted.

After its sparsely attended Memorial Day weekend premier, attendees took to the festival's Facebook page to say the event may have taken that label a bit too seriously.
