When summer temperatures rise, higher elevations beckon. And when they beckon with live music? That's even better.
Idaho's mountains have a long tradition of music festivals, and this year is no different - just a little slower. After running into difficulties securing permits in Hailey, late-night groove and performance art festival MASSV is taking the year off but will return in 2015 (although precisely where remains to be seen). The annual Idaho-Down at Brundage Mountain in McCall also is taking a break while renovation occurs at the lodge. There's no McCall Music Festival this year on Fourth of July weekend, either.
Still, lots of fun options remain. Don't forget your bug spray.
SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL AT ROSEBERRY
July 17-19, about a mile east of Donnelly, thesummermusicfestival.com
Presented by the McCall Folklore Society, this easygoing event is pushing 40 years in business. Thursday is locals night, Friday is string night (Chicken Dinner Road, Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers), Saturday is world and rock night (Tony Furtado, The Black Lillies, Toubab Krewe). Coolers are welcome to augment food and beverage vendors, but you can't camp on-site.
ROCK THE MOUNTAIN
July 25 and 26, Melba, http://ift.tt/Vl5PKs
In its 17th year, the annual heavy-metal blowout is becoming Rock the Melba. The original mountainous site near Grimes Creek has been traded for a grassy knoll about five minutes from the Snake River. More than 30 local bands ranging from Half the World to Krystos will crank tunes off Melmont Road, west of Idaho 45. Hit the Facebook page for updates.
NORTHERN ROCKIES FOLK FESTIVAL
Aug. 1 and 2, Hop Porter Park, Hailey, northernrockiesmusicfestival.org
Started in 1977, this two-day event has outgrown its name, offering a diverse lineup of music, food and art vendors. In addition to touring acts, you'll see local performers as 15-minute between-set acts. Overnight camping is available at nearby Lyons Park, and there's a playground for kids in a park by Big Wood River.
Aug. 1: Tyler Bushman, The Far West, The Damn Quails
Aug. 2: The Sheep Bridge Jumpers, Sammy Brue, Jimmy Robb Band, Jackson Tanner, Smoke'N Bones, Paul Thorn
YELLOW PINE MUSIC AND HARMONICA FESTIVAL
Aug. 1-3, Yellow Pine, yellowpinemusicandharmonicafestival.org
This is the 25th year of the Yellow Pine harmonica blowout, which gets going on a Friday afternoon and ends around noon Sunday. It's a backwoods party unlike any other, with blues-harp jams, harmonica lessons and tons of talented players. There's even a crowd-pleaser contest for kid harmonica players. Yellow Pine is an obvious camping opportunity, but be aware that no fires will be allowed in the nearby free camping areas in the woods. There will, however, be lots of informal jams happening there.
BRAUN BROTHERS REUNION FESTIVAL
Aug. 7-9, Challis community Stage, Challis, braunbrothersreunion.com
Americana, country and roots-rock dominate this annual event from the Braun clan. Take your fly rod and fish your way back to Boise.

MCCALL JAZZ FESTIVAL
Aug. 9, McCall Golf Course, brownpapertickets.com
Now in its second year, this benefit for The Shepherd's Home in McCall is hosted by singer and saxophonist Curtis Stigers. You sit in the grass with a cold adult beverage, surrounded by pine trees, and enjoy jazz outdoors. The musical lineup includes The Ben Burdick Trio, Andrew Coba, The Sneider Brothers, Joel Frahm, Ann Hampton Callaway and Curtis Stigers and his band.
