Ballard's Macefield Music Festival Hits a Growth Spurt - TheStranger.com

Seven Bands You Should Not Miss

Last October, it took a passionate group of Ballard-area promoters, venue owners, and personalities to sweep the Macefield Music Festival together from the scattered ashes of Seattle Weekly's sixth-annual Reverb Music Festival after the publication officially canceled it just over a month before it was scheduled to take place. The result was a rebranded and rebooked all-day musical celebration that was exciting, and well-attended enough, to bring it back for a second year. This time, the festival grounds will include eight stages (over last year's three), which will play host to nearly 80 bands-a massive undertaking that resembles the ambitious bookings of Reverbs past.


The similarity is no mistake-festival booker Kwab Copeland is a carryover from the fest's previous incarnation and a firm believer in maintaining the musical tradition of the neighborhood. 'Over the last 20 years, Ballard has maintained a vibrant music scene, mainly through the efforts of folks at the Tractor, the Sunset, Conor Byrne, etc.' Copeland explains via e-mail. 'But then you go back to the years of the Backstage, and then back even further to Ballard as a rough fishing village, and music has always played a part. Edith Macefield, who we named the festival after, was a musician in Ballard (she played the clarinet and the saxophone) long before she made the famous decision not to sell her house [to developers].'


Copeland and his team have also tacked on a few comedy acts to the billing (fingers crossed John Keister will put on a Ballard driving clinic!), all-ages indoor and outdoor stages, and the Macefield Market, a two-day pop-up market that features a poster exhibition, record swap, and trade show, with clothing and crafts vendors, plus a beer-and-drink garden.


But the bands! See as many as you can, of course, but here are a few you should officially not miss (in chronological order):


UGLYFRANK (Friday, 7:15 pm, Tractor Tavern)

Like the rest of his ILLFIGHTYOU fam, Tacoma's UGLYFRANK is a breathless advocate for reckless behavior when he touches the mic. Filling every inch of his chosen West Coast-style beats with rapid-fire, multi-peak lines, FRANK's vocals are fuel that can ignite any room.


Inly (Friday, 9 pm, Sunset Tavern)

An eclectic hometown six-piece, Inly lay gorgeous folk-style singing in the vein of Radiation City over soft piano and percussion. Slow psychobilly/surf guitar and muted horns augment the tender mix.


The Sonics (Friday, 8 pm, KEXP Main Stage)

Tacoma garage-rock pioneers the Sonics remind us that Grit City has been rolling tough since back in the day. Not only did they know how to rock catchy lyrics and riff progressions as well as the Kinks, but singer Gerry Roslie wailed like a beast, which not everybody had the guts to do in the early 1960s. Earn a couple of Northwest rock history points on this one.


Big Business (Friday, 11:30 pm, Tractor Tavern)


All the smashing and bellowing you'd expect from the Murder City Devils drummer and Karp bassist/vocalist, but throw in the fact that the two also play with the Melvins, and you're already sold. The LA-based band's 2014 album, Battlefields Forever, is the first on their own Gold Metal Records imprint, and it's a collection of big, bad, sinister guitar lines, Viking-strength vocals, and burning long-form songwriting.


Sage (Friday, 11:45 pm, Conor Byrne)

Sage is a band I'm surprised didn't take off during the early-/mid-'90s (and so is their bio writer, who boldly quoth, 'Sage is one of the most unfairly overlooked bands in Seattle music history'). The Seattle three-piece had all the technical prowess, pained grunge vocals, freak-funk-flecked bass, and loud-soft versatility to grab any major-label A&R's ears in those fruitful days. Their inventive rocktail could very well have been too complex for the masses back then, but it might be perfect for today.


THEESatisfaction (Saturday, 11:30 pm, Tractor Tavern)

The hypercreative Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White thrive in the vocal-jazz-meets-hiphop sweet spot they've created for themselves. Their live set is all about style, and whether you've seen them kick their flavor over those rolling samples and gently knocking beats before or not, it'll be worth the trip. My bet is you'll hear a new jam or two, as well.


Helms Alee (Saturday, 11:45 pm, Sunset Tavern)

Each part of Helms Alee's attack is impressive: Ben Verellen's twisted guitar lines and relentless howl coupled with Dana James's counterbalanced singing and bass harmonies, with the drumming of Hozoji Matheson-Margullis, who puts on a show all her own behind the kit. This will be the most badass way to close out your Saturday.

Experience Ultra Music Festival 2014 All Over Again With The Official Aftermovie - We Got This Covered


With tickets for the 2015 edition of the Ultra Music Festival now on sale, it seems like the perfect time to experience last year's outing all over again. Thankfully, you can do just that, as the official aftermovie has been released. Opting for a bit of a different style than we see from most of the major EDM festivals, this short film, titled United We Dance, is actually quite impressive and does a fantastic job of selling Ultra.


Cutting between interviews with prominent EDM artists like Carl Cox, Martin Garrix, Nicky Romero, Krewella, Zedd and more, beautiful footage of Miami and stunning shots of the festival itself, this aftermovie truly is a treat. To be honest, it's probably one of the best aftermovies I've ever seen and I think they did a really fantastic job with it. If you need something to convince your friends to attend this year, this video should do the trick.

It was weird, wild, and wet last weekend. We're talking about Summer Ends Music Festival, Lucky Man Concerts' three-day extravaganza scheduled for Tempe Beach Park. But mother nature had other plans, and after the second huge rainstorm to hit the Valley in month dumped more than an inch of rain, the city of Tempe shut down Tempe Beach Park, forcing organizer Tom LaPenna to scramble to find a backup venue for his festival.

Luckily, LaPenna has another venue at his disposal, the Marquee Theatre, and he was able to move the bulk of his festival indoors. However, that meant there was only one stage, and the local acts got the short end of stick, getting bumped from the lineup.

No one can blame LaPenna for that decision. Surely, the major headliners are responsible for the bulk of ticket sales. It's just a shame that the bulk of the local bands whom he deputized to sell tickets for the festival didn't get a chance to reap the rewards of their efforts. Lost in time, like tears in Tempe rain.


So the show went on, albeit not exactly as planned. The Descendents played what was supposedly their first club show in two decades (does the Marquee count as a club?) and kicked ass, and the Replacements were golden, even if Taking Back Sunday had a sub-par show.


It was a weekend of great music, regardless. The quantity might not have been there, but the quality was. Here's what we learned. --David Accomazzo


Lindsey Stirling is absolutely ridiculous live Lindsey Stirling is a proud Gilbert product, and her appearance on America's Got Talent has enabled her to achieve a level of success most artists around town wouldn't dare to dream of. She's a talented violinist and dancer. There's no other act in the country quite like her. And she's so frickin' sweet and has such a vivacious spirit that writing anything critical of her feels like punching a puppy, but... call me a crush video (too soon?), because there's something about Sterling's act that just feels so limiting. On the stage at Tempe Beach Park on Friday, she strutted around stage dressed in zebra-stripe tights and a black top, and for the most part, she delivered a great performance. Gone were the flubs that so irked Piers Morgan on America's Got Talent. But as she strutted across the stage, kicking her legs and playing sixteenth-note arpeggios over EDM- and hip-hop-inspired backing tracks, Stirling's unique flavor started to get a little old, like a piece of gum that's been chewed too long. There's only so many times you can watch her prance, sprite-like, across the stage before you start craving a beer and need to leave. I can't help but think that Stirling's music and live performance would be so much more interesting if she didn't constrain herself to predictable dramatics of power-pop and electronica. The talent is there, but the musical adventurousness and exploration is not. --D.A.

Dressed in skin-tight patterned pants and a studded bra, Nicki pumped up the audience and gave them a good show, with one of her hot male backup dancers getting on top of her right on the stage.


Nicki strutted across the stage, flaunting her best asset and showing off her racy dance moves. Get it, girl!

Nicki also rocked with Ariana at the music fest. The duo performed a sexy rendition their smash hit 'Bang Bang,' and even rubbed their booties together! Nicki told the audience to 'make some noise for the beautiful Ariana Grande' and Ariana called Nicki Minaj 'queen' in front of the huge crowd.

Ultra Music Festival recently opened ticket registration via its website for the 2015 edition of its flagship event in Miami, Florida. Those who register will receive exclusive access to Tier 1 and Tier 2 ticket pricings. Registration closes at midnight EST on September 29 at http://ift.tt/XqLHaw. The exclusive registration ticket prices will only be available to those who pre-registered and are priced at $299.95 (Tier 1) and $379.95 (Tier 2).


These prices are all-inclusive of taxes and fees though a nominal shipping surcharge will be added depending upon shipment location. Enrollment for pre-registration has been extremely high. Reduced priced tickets will sell out fast.


For the first time in its history, and as a thank you to its loyal legion of fans, Ultra Music Festival is reducing the price of General Admission tickets. These tickets will be available to the general public, with no registration required. General Admission tickets for the seventeenth edition of Ultra Music Festival: Miami go on sale at 1PM EST September 30 for $449.95, nearly $50 less than the 2014 event. VIP tickets are priced at $1,149.95.

Portraits of 11 of the Americana Music Festival's Most Intriguing Acts - Mother Jones

The Americana Music Association, which just wrapped up its 15th Americana Music Festival, is not so much about defining a genre as it is about circling the wagons around a wide variety of roots-influenced styles and staging a big-tent meeting for the faithful. The music spans roughly three generations of artists, from the likes of Loretta Lynn and Billy Joe Shaver, who helped define classic country music; to musicians like Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, who during the '70s combined reverence for the past with rock and roll; to young artists like Robert Ellis, The Milk Carton Kids, and others who are innovating and expanding the older traditions with fresh energy. No matter their age, Americana artists are finding a growing audience to start and sustain careers; it's as much about moving forward as it is preserving the past. With 160-plus acts in Nashville for this year's festival, there was no shortage of great music and fascinating individuals. Here are portraits of 11 artists who are definitely worth a closer look.



Nashville's guardian angel of songwriting, Jim Lauderdale, is truly the face, and voice, of Americana-a humorous, kind, and gracious ambassador to the association, and host of the Americana Awards for the last 12 years. Lauderdale's songs have been recorded by George Strait (more than a dozen of them), Vince Gill, Blake Shelton, and the Dixie Chicks, to name just a few. His most recent album (number 26), I'm a Song, features songwriting collaborations with Elvis Costello, Robert Hunter, and Bobby Bare. Near the end of his set at the venue 3rd and Lindsley, he was joined onstage by Lucinda Williams, who asked the crowd, in her trademark drawl, 'Why is Brad Paisley up on all these billboards and not Jim?'



Winners of the 2014 Americana Award for Best Group/Duo, The Milk Carton Kids are the Los Angeles-based guitar and vocal duo of Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. With an uncanny chemistry, they blend their voices and guitars through one microphone into gossamer folk songs with the precision and depth of Simon & Garfunkel or the Everly Brothers.



Robert Ellis was nominated for Americana's Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for The Lights from the Chemical Plant, and song of the year for 'Only Lies.' While heavily steeped in country and western music, his current album goes into more experimental territory, blending elements of prog/psychedelic rock and jazz within a sparse soundscape. The Houston, Texas native recently relocated to Greenpoint, Brooklyn.



Nashville's own The Howlin' Brothers- Ian Craft on banjo and fiddle, Jared Green on guitar and harmonica, and Ben Plasse on bass-play dirt-under-the-fingernails bluegrass, blues, Cajun, social-dance music, and anything else 'old-timey' they can scratch up, mixing originals that sit nicely along side timeless songs. Their third album, Trouble, was released this year on Brendan Benson's Readymade Records.



Leo 'Bud' Welch of Bruce, Mississippi, is both one of the oldest and newest artists at the festival. Welch, 82, released his first album, Sabougla Voices, early this year on Big Legal Mess Records, home of Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside. He had been playing gospel in small local churches, and blues at picnics and parties for decades in a stripped-bare style, but a cold call to the record label finally got the ball rolling.



Doug Seegers is finally doing what he was born to do: write and sing soulful, sharp-witted, universally identifiable country songs. For much of his 17 years in Nashville, Seegers was homeless, drunk, and playing for change on the streets. A trained cabinet maker from New York, Seegers had tried to make it as a musician and songwriter in the '70s and had played in a band with a then unknown Buddy Miller in Austin, Texas. Through luck or divine intervention, Swedish country singer Jill Johnson (country music is big in Scandinavia!) met Doug while producing a documentary on Nashville musicians. Dumbfounded by the quality of his songwriting, she recorded a single with him that hit No. 1 on iTunes in Sweden. Through the path of recovery, and support from artists such as Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, steel guitarist Al Perkins, and producer Will Kimbrough, Seegers released his first album, Going Down to the River, on Rounder.



The granddaughter of 'Mother' Maybelle Carter, daughter Carl Smith and June Carter, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene Carter is music royalty's wild child. She recorded her first three albums in England. Her 1978 self-titled album with Graham Parker and the Rumor and 1980's Musical Shapes, with her then husband Nick Lowe and his band Rockpile, blended country music with high-energy New Wave. Last year, she returned to her family's legacy with Carter Girl, produced by Don Was. The album brings her youthful energy to songs from the Carter Family repertoire. Beginning in early 2015, she will join John Mellencamp on an 80-date tour.



The Haden Triplets use their sibling chemistry to beautifully reanimate classic country and gospel music. They are the daughters of jazz bassist and composer Charlie Haden, who also grew up in a country music family, performing on the radio in Iowa as part of the Haden Family Band. Five years after Charlie's country music tribute album Ramblin' Boy, which featured the triplets, they now have their own self-titled album, produced by Ry Cooder and released on Jack White's Third Man Records.



The Mastersons, a husband and wife duo, play straightforward country-inflected rock with big-hearted lyrics, tight song structures, and sweetly intertwined harmonies. They released their second album, Good Luck Charm, this past July on New West Records, but are already touring veterans as the core of Steve Earle's band, the Dukes.



England's Ethan Johns recently released his second album, The Reckoning, a suite of stark, mythology-steeped songs that draw from British folk and early American blues. Johns also has a substantial career as a producer, having worked with Ryan Adams (who returned the favor to produce this album), Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, and Ray LaMontagne. He no doubt learned a few things from his father, Glyn Johns, the legendary producer of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and The Eagles.



Sons of Bill are brothers James, Sam, and Abe (father: William Wilson), plus Seth Green on bass and Todd Wellons on drums. The band's sound ranges from 'No Depression' alt-country of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt to Byrds-like folk-rock to the Chapel Hill alt-rock of early R.E.M, and many points in between. Their new album, Love and Logic, is produced by Ken Coomer of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco.

Global Citizen Festival Brings Stars to Central Park - New York Times


Definitionally, there is a certain amount of pill-swallowing at a concert like the Global Citizen Festival, which on Saturday - for the third year in a row - brought 60,000 people to the Great Lawn at Central Park.


At almost six hours, the show included plenty of speeches from charitable-foundation executives and heart-rending videos about those who suffer from poverty and its symptoms sprinkled in between performances from music superstars.


But even if this made for some neck-snapping juxtapositions - Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, giving way to Carrie Underwood, high priestess of Nashville - show organizers bent over backward to not give the impression that the do-good bits were the chaff to the musical wheat.


The Global Citizen Project, which organizes this festival, has the goal of eradicating extreme poverty by 2030. All the performers - Jay Z, No Doubt, Ms. Underwood, the Roots, Fun., Tiesto - donated their services, making for an afternoon and evening of gleaming music for a set of causes too often deemed unglamorous.

Still, some of the brightest moments came when facing issues head-on: Mr. Modi reaffirming his commitment to provide toilets to all Indian citizens by 2019, or even a video featuring Elmo and Raya from 'Sesame Street' talking about the necessity of clean toilets. There were videos about the devastation caused by polio, and the need for vaccines; Erna Solberg, prime minister of Norway, pledged more than $1.2 billion over the next six years for vaccinations in underserved countries. And there were steady reminders that poverty often disproportionately affects young girls.


Yes, there were famous musicians, too, probably the highest star wattage of the event's three years. (Previous performers have include Stevie Wonder, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and John Mayer.) The hugeness of the event, though, felt cause-driven, not celebrity-driven. Even the generally unflappable Jay Z, the show's headliner, marveled at the scene: 'That's the most incredible thing I ever saw,' he said, looking out over the crowd.


Tickets could be earned via laptop activism - sending tweets, signing petitions, sending Facebook messages and so on. For the first time, the concert aired live on MSNBC, placing it in line with other large-scale charity events and telethons. (It was also live streamed, and a truncated version was shown on NBC.)


No Doubt was taut and convincing, with Gwen Stefani maturing into full Debbie Harry mode, singing in a tough husky voice. (The band was joined by Sting for a cover of the Police's 'Message in a Bottle.') Early in the day, Fun. served up its family-sized Queen-isms, and Tiesto his booming post-trance pop. Ms. Underwood appeared to be undersinging during her set of bionic anthems, either to protect her voice or because cameras can't really tell the difference.


Celebrities - Adrian Grenier, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba - popped up here and there to introduce musicians or to flog their own charitable efforts. But it was far more intriguing to watch various officials take a turn on the big stage: Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations was bashful; the American ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, was authoritative; and, Jim Yong Kim, president of the World Bank, was surprisingly limber and enthused. Ndaba Mandela, one of Nelson Mandela's grandsons, led the crowd in a fevered call-and-response chant.


Only in a few places did the music performed onstage veer into the neighboring territory of polemic. The Roots performed a moving version of Fela Kuti's 'Water No Get Enemy.' It was the sort of gesture that underscores this band's value - it's flexible, improvisationally deft, and unafraid of statement-making. (The show's credits indicated D'Angelo was to perform with them, but he was nowhere to be seen.)


A more leaden approach to inspiration came from Alicia Keys, who performed with Idan Raichel, an Israeli musician, and with Ali Amr, of Palestinian background, on a new song, 'We Are Here,' made exclusively of spine-crushing treacle ('Let's talk about Chi-town/ Let's talk about Gaza'). It was the sort of big-tent anthem meant for group singalong, a throwback to an outmoded idea of what activist music might mean.


More than any of the other acts, Jay Z's set was full of message music, though not the sort that lined up with the day's causes. (On television, his set was heavily censored for language.) His songs are about a different sort of poverty - suffering under its thumb and overcoming it - and he delivers them with the confidence of someone who's seen both sides.


Here, he smiled - a lot. He is an easeful performer, and during this show, an enthused one as well.


And of course Beyoncé came out, with hair at full Tina Turner, to perform a duet with Jay Z, her husband, on two of his lesser songs, 'Holy Grail' and 'Young Forever.' The strength of their marriage has been the subject of rumor for months, and they've strategically used public appearances to refute them. On a night devoted to the world's causes, this was a moment that far too easily reshaped the narrative: two people doing an act of charity, for the planet but also each other.

(UPDATED) Summer Ends Music Festival Canceled Due to Weather - Phoenix New Times (blog)


Update 2: Good news for tonight. From Luckyman Concerts' Facebook page: 'Tentatively to play, The Maine Taking Back Sunday Luscious Jackson Descendents (Official) & The Replacements'


Update: According to a press release from Luckyman Concerts, which organized Summer Ends Music Festival, the city of Tempe shut down the festival at 2:30 p.m. Organizers are still working on the details, but they have confirmed that they are trying to move tonight's events to the Marquee Theatre.


'We have spoken to all the bands on today's bill and most are ready and willing to perform at the Marquee Theatre tonight', Tom LaPenna of Lucky Man Concerts said in the press release.


All scheduled performances tomorrow have been moved to the Marquee Theatre.


Paid tickets will be honored tonight, and comp tickets will be honored on a space-available basis. Vouchers will be given to those with tickets who choose not to attend tonight's festival.


Original story: Well, can't say we're surprised. But we have word that the Summer Ends Music Festival scheduled for today has been canceled.


The highlight of today was performances by the Descendents and the Replacements on the national stage, and Black Carl, Fayuca, and Playboy Manbaby on the local stage.


There's talk that some of the performances might move to the Marquee Theatre. We will update if we hear more.

Love Cincinnati? You can help create, then get Cincinnati Ink - WLWT Cincinnati

Over the last 18 years, murals like many in downtown Cincinnati have been painted by a group called ArtWorks.


But this weekend, ArtWorks will be working on a different, more permanent kind of ink.


If you love Cincinnati, now is your chance to help mold a poem, parts of which will become permanently tattooed on about 200 Cincinnatians.


''Ink Your Love' for us means write it down and make it permanent, that you love the city of Cincinnati. What we are doing is inviting Cincinnatians through a program called Cincinnati Ink to participate with us to celebrate Cincinnati,' Teresa Hoelle, vice president of development & external affairs at Artworks, said.

A mobile mailbox, which looks like a U.S. Post Office box, but is painted white, kicks off its trek at the Midpoint Music Festival.


'People can write down what they love about Cincinnati and put it in the mailbox. You can go to our website and also express your love, or even tweet #inkyourlove. Share what you love about Cincinnati,' Hoelle said.


And the words are already flowing in. Music Hall, Union Terminal, and local architecture are popular topics thus far.


Once all the comments are collected, Chase Public, a poetry group regularly seen at the festival, will author the poem which will be revealed in December.


Tattooing will happen between March and May, and there will be a celebration of the project around this time next year.


For those who don't like the idea of a permanent tattoo, temporary tattoos are also available.


All of the temporary tattoos are designed by Tri-State artists, cost $15 at the MidPoint Music Festival and all the money raised goes to help fun local artists in the Tri-State.


The mobile mailbox will be at Midpoint Music Festival Thursday night and will then be moved around town.

Project Pabst Music Festival Invades Portland This Weekend! - SMI (Seattle Music Insider)

Two of our staff are headed off to Portland for the and Project Pabst Festival, which will feature Main Stage performances until the early evening on Saturday and Sunday, as well as 'late night' performances at venues throughout the city. Tears for Fears will headline tomorrow Modest Mouse will headline Sunday. To help them create the ideal multi-faceted festival experience Portland deserves, Pabst brought in Superfly, the renowned producers of such culture-defining events as Bonnaroo and Outside Lands.


Project Pabst is an innovative celebration of Pabst and the city of Portland, OR, featuring a main festival and night shows comprised of music, entertainment, food and drink. The festival takes place on two stages over 10 acres in the restored Zidell Yards in the heart of the South Waterfront District. The Violent Femmes, GZA and Rocket From the Crypt are among the many other artists who will perform. Fans must be over 21 to attend.


In all, more than 30 bands will perform. Their exclusive weekend VIP tickets did sell out. However, single day passes are still available for Saturday here, Sunday here, or both days here. Unless you were lucky to purchase the VIP tickets, the 'late night' events do require separate tickets, so be sure to check their website for additional fees.


One dollar from every festival ticket sold will go to help the Jeremy Wilson Foundation, dedicated to providing financial assistance in times of medical crisis and to improving the overall well-being of individual musicians and their families.

Work underway on site for huge Strip music festival - VEGAS INC


Another project on the north Strip is moving ahead as planned, furthering the anticipated turnaround of an area that's struggled for years.


Construction crews are doing site work at the southwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, the future home of the Rock in Rio USA music festival.


The sprawling, mostly dirt lot has been smoothed out, and work crews today were spraying water and moving earth.


Rock in Rio is scheduled for May 8-9 and May 15-16 next year. The open-air, five-stage venue will be called City of Rock, and organizers have said they expect more than 300,000 attendees.


Founded in 1985, Rock in Rio has held 13 festivals in three countries - Brazil, Portugal, and Spain - and drawn more than 7 million attendees as of May, according to management. The festival in Las Vegas will be the U.S. debut.


Founder Roberto Medina teamed with MGM Resorts International, Cirque du Soleil and billionaire supermarket mogul Ron Burkle, founder of investment firm Yucaipa Cos., to produce the show.


MGM bought the 26-acre site in May 2007, at the height of the real estate bubble, for $444 million.


The north Strip has been blighted in recent years by abandoned resort projects and large swaths of empty land with uncertain futures. Foot traffic has been thin.


But the area is poised for a rebound. SLS Las Vegas, the old Sahara, opened Aug. 23 across the street from the Rock in Rio site. Also, Malaysia's Genting Group, a casino powerhouse, plans to spend billions turning the mothballed Echelon project into an 87-acre Chinese-themed megaresort.

1st Annual Boobstock Music Festival - FOX10 News

The Rack Pack, a cancer awareness advocacy team, will be hosting 'Boobstock Music Festival' Saturday, September 27th in Grand Bay at Odd Fellows Festival Park. Gates open at 10:00am with a talented lineup of musicians, as well as activities for all ages, great food, a silent auction and more. The party will continue into the night with gates closing at 10:00pm. Admission is $5 for adults, kids 11 and under get in free. All profits from this event will be donated to the American Cancer Society for research, treatments, patient lodging, and awareness.


Representatives from The Mobile County Department of Public Health will be providing free breast exams and signing women up for free mammograms. There will be a guest speaker from the American Cancer Society, and the Pink Heals Tour will bring out their hot pink fire truck and fire chief car for survivors to sign. Activities include bungee jump, rock wall, petting zoo, game trailer, caricature artist, hamster water ball, bounce castle inflatables and obstacle course, laser tag, pedal train, workshops, portable swings, and a psychic medium.


The Rack Pack will also give away door prizes throughout the day. There will also be a silent auction featuring items from Harley Davidson, Beau Rivage, Zeke's Landing, Bellingrath Gardens, Elements Massage, Laps, Flora-Bama, AMF Bowling, Alligator Alley and more. Vendor shopping includes everything from art, to handmade candles, jewelry, woodwork, oils and gifts. Food vendors will be there selling seafood, hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, candy apples, snow cones and ice cream.


The Boobstock line-up consists of all genres of music including ten local musicians, and one from Nashville, TN. Performers include Sugarcane Jane, Christina Christian, Megan McMillan, Eric Erdman, Laci Wright, Vertigo Haze, Revere, Bobby Cool, Chico & Chris, and The Easy Tongues.


Bates and the Yellowhammers will also be there. The group consists of Matthew Bates as the lead singer and guitar player, Perry Chestang/vocalist, Thomas Herring/vocalist, Daniel Charpie/bass, and David Fenner/drums. Matthew Bates started his career in a rock band with his fellow band mates as a guitar player. Bates and Herring had the idea to change the face of country with a hip-hop sound and an alternative/southern rock accent. Jane's Addiction performs at the House of Blues

Two blocks of the sunset strip are arguably the most important in the history of rock and roll. I took a walk along them last Saturday during the Sunset Strip Music Festival, now in its seventh year and bigger than ever. I started at the Whiskey-a-go-go, a famously small two-story red building hugging the corner of San Vincente and found myself two blocks later at the Roxy, a seventies art-deco-esque building with a marquee almost bigger than it is. Each venue is famous for its intimacy and starting, re-starting, recording live and hosting filmed concerts of some of the greatest bands of all time.


The Festival cleverly anchored itself on these famous blocks as the city shut down traffic so we could freely walk between these two historic buildings and enjoy the three additional outdoor stages as well. It was a treat for my fellow music lovers and I to sample the 70 different bands that rotated across the stages through the weekend, no doubt thinking of whose footsteps they were walking in before them, including The Doors, Elton John, Motley Crue, The Byrds, Alice Cooper, Frank Zappa, Bruce Springsteen, George Benson, Genesis, and later just Peter Gabriel, Neil Young... the list is unnaturally long for a distance you could throw a stone.


I enjoyed watching smaller acts in the afternoon at the Whiskey like Future Villains scream their post-punk rock rage, then heard Say Say amplify there smooth ballads on an outdoor stage and then caught Michael Rey & The Woebegones at the Roxy as they took me through a 'Lou Reed' vibe. I was reminded me of the richness of musical possibilities that launched from these very same streets for decades.


As day turned to night the festival brought in bigger acts like Mayer Hawthorne, Cold War Kids, the Birds of Satan and Empire of the Sun, but the stars of the festival were Jane's Addiction who were honored by the city and were the festival's big ticket star that closed saturday night on the outdoor west stage.


For those of you who don't know, Jane's Addiction (Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Chris Chaney) is the group that made 'alternative rock' alternative. Their 1985 album Nothing's Shocking became a counter culture favorite. 'We were the house band of the sunset strip,' Ferrel said. 'We performed all the time at both the Roxy and The Whiskey through the 80s and 90s,' he said as they were honored with the 'Edgar Valentine Award' at the House of Blues Friday night by the city. The City Council also handed them a plaque informing them that September 18th was now officially Jane's' Addiction day.


Before Nirvana broke big and redefined a new alternative sound, Jane's Addiction had already been there. But after a second album, Ritual De Lo Habitual, the band shifted and transformed and never broke big the way many thought they would. Their farewell concert in 1991 was the first year of the Lollapalooza festival, which they started, and that's still going strong today. Amid multiple reunions and break ups over the years, their subsequent reformings created new works (the albums Strays in 2003 and The Great Escape Artist in 2011). But amid the pauses, half breakups and reuniting they seem more solid now than ever. Maybe their history shows in some ways that they are unable not to be a band.


Looking happy and content they crushed it Saturday night rocking the outdoor festival thundering their music across Sunset Boulevard to a standing room of street attendees as they performed their album Nothing Is Shocking in its entirety.


But they were all smiles Friday night at the House of Blues in that more intimate setting. After being handed their awards a gracious Perry said, 'You know, we always wanted LA's love and affection and tonight, we feel in some way we've earned it.' Then Perry turned to his band mates and suggested some impromptu playing. The whole group quickly agreed and grabbed the instruments of another band set to play. They rocked two favorites, including 'Aint no Right.'


That moment was one of the best moments of the festival to me, unscripted and raw, unexpected and electric. The band exploded into action and felt current, even as they sang songs from albums 25 years old. It was honest, heartfelt and explosive, exactly the energy the festival is trying to bottle. And it was everything the Sunset Strip Music Festival wants to bring back to the boulevard every year.

Getting Lost in the South: The Hopscotch Music Festival 2014 - PopMatters

The heat and humidity on this fine September afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina is a vertiginous obscenity. I am staggering helplessly down some filthy backstreet in the hometown of both David Sedaris and Corrosion of Conformity with sweat engulfing my entire being, looking fruitlessly for some small, obscure museum where I hope to catch an early set from the incomparable Thurston Moore. I am here for the Hopscotch Music Festival, a three day event that has taken place every September over the last few years in downtown Raleigh. The helpful, low key event staff failed in one crucial point early on in the festival: they have neglected to provide any sort of coherent maps, signs, or other physical directions for heatstroked out-of-towners unfamiliar with this strange little Southern city.


The reasoning behind this is, I believe, that anyone unfamiliar with the venues can pull up the website map on their phone, but between the website's layout, my somewhat out-of-date phone, and the relentless, hideous heat that bathes everything in a nasty film of sweat and humidity, this is easier said than done.



I take refuge in a comfortable looking bar in order to collect myself and gain some sense of orientation. After being engulfed in a gorgeous icy blast of air-conditioning, which feels like the very breath of God, I plop myself down in an empty booth and wait for my mind to clear. A waitress appears and asks in a chatty southern drawl what I would like to drink and calls me 'baby' in a way that seems in no way flirtatious. I am remembering why I am here now; a music festival set against the backdrop of a hip southern college town. I am here both to check out one of the most interesting new music festivals to crop up in the last few years, and to confront, if I can muster the courage, the reality of the South.


I have been living in nearby Greensboro, NC for barely a month, having never even visited the region before, and I am still grappling, in my own frazzled way, with what it all means. As I just mentioned, waitresses really do call you 'baby' here in a very unflirtatious way. They eat grits for breakfast and drink grotesquely over-sweetened iced tea. They also seem to be very, very enthusiastic about Christianity. Everything that I had heard about the South is true and I can't quite believe it.



Hopscotch, in addition to their notable national and international acts, hosts a large number of the best local bands from North Carolina. I hope to inspect some of the local talent, meet some genuine southerners, and try to come to grips with my swampy, peculiar new home. But first: Thurston Moore, this weekend's curator, and the first set of the festival. I realize that the venue I am seeking is about a block down the street. I finish my cold, refreshing beer, tip the charming waitress, and prepare myself for what will be a fascinating, but exhausting weekend.


I enter a tasteful little venue with a small stage on one side of the top floor, and tables set up on a slightly lowered second floor, the two-rooms connected by a artsy little walkway. I realize that, since this is an early VIP only performance, that the alcohol being dispensed on the lower floor is free. The crowd entering with me seems to understand this instinctually and comes streaming past me, pouring booze down their throats with amazing speed and enthusiasm. Make no mistake about it: these North Carolinians like their liquor, and they will consume it in staggering quantities throughout the weekend.


My attention is transfixed elsewhere; at the tall, gangly figure tuning his guitar on stage and being ignored by the rest of the crowd; it is Thurston Moore himself. Records like Sister, Goo, and Dirty have been making my ears ring and my heart soar since my late teens, and I find him an impressive figure indeed. Moore finishes fiddling with his guitar and hops down from the stage to grab a drink and a snack. No one is paying him the slightest attention; it is unclear if I am the only person here who recognizes him on sight, or if I am just the only person who cares.


Moore hangs around in the audience for a few minutes, not talking to anyone, and looking unselfconscious before getting back up on stage and beginning his set. What follows is twenty minutes or so of apparently improvised guitar work with a drummer accompanying; squalls of feedback reverberate around the room, bursting in my mind and imagination like bioluminescent dragonflies. He builds tension and then releases it a wash of glorious noise. The set is short, intense, and totally captivating.


Tonight's main stage headliner is De La Soul, which seems like a good idea on paper. Who doesn't like to cut loose with some golden era hip-hop? De La Soul is one of those acts that is difficult not to like, and seem likely to please just about everyone in attendance. The result is somewhat less dramatic, as De La Soul spend much of their set pretending to argue about which half of the audience is really here to party and are willing to express this desire by cheering at specified moments, a routine that strikes me as clique and rather tedious. De La Soul are fun, but predictable. The sound on the outside main stage is mediocre at best, and I do not witness a satisfying main stage set all weekend. I am eager for more intimate environs, and perhaps some local heavy metal, so I wander through the steamy summer rain in search of a club listed in my already greasy and sodden brochure as Kings Barcade.


I am pleased to discover that Kings Barcade is a comfortable second floor bar, with a welcoming atmosphere, and excellent sound. I am downright delighted to find local traditional heavy metal enthusiasts Colossus banging away upon my arrival, complete with Bruce Dickinsonian vocals and an array of tasty riffs. This is totally irony-free traditional heavy metal of the best kind; all swords, sorcery, and headbanging. In these dark and ignorant times in which we live, it is rare to see traditional metal in the United States performed so expertly, and I feel a deep, surging contentment. Solar Halos, hailing from nearby Chapel Hill, follow the mighty Colossus and we are plunged into dreamy, glorious doom. The high quality sound here in Kings Barcade is really starting to show its stuff, and I am buffeted fore and aft by waves of despondent bass and percussion.



There are those of us who have always felt somewhat cheated by the reality of industrial music. Throughout the '90s 'industrial music' came to mean 'lame third-rate goth music.' I get the impression that Tristan Shone, aka Author & Punisher, feels the same way, and has made it his business to truly industrialize industrial music and bring it back to the demented, technology haunted weirdoes to whom the genre rightfully belongs. I stand at the foot of the stage, admiring his handiwork, as Shone carefully sets up his 'instruments,' which look like a collection of Satanic sewing machines, kazoos, and weightlifting equipment designed for roided-out goblins.




The man behind Author & Punisher is apparently an engineer by trade, and likes to build machines for making unspeakable noise and scaring the shit out of hipsters. Indeed, the skinny jeans wearing, wax-mustachioed guys who packed Kings Barcade for Solar Halos have fled at the very sight of Author & Punisher's nasty little arsenal, and they are right to be afraid. When Shone starts making his truly unholy racket, all slamming and droning and screeching, my heart becomes filled with a combination of hate, misanthropy, and joy.


It is getting late, and this evening's final set is getting ready to follow the wonderful cataclysm that was Author & Punisher. Normally, I would say that Author & Punisher would be a very difficult act to follow, but this is Tim Hecker we are talking about. Tim Hecker has been blanking out my mind and hypnotizing my senses with his haunting, dense, mesmeric abstractions for some time now, but I have never seen him perform live before, and I have no idea what to expect. Suddenly, the set goes perfectly dark, and then the lights at the bar follow, and we are plunged into inky, primordial blackness. I feel a churning, anxious anticipation deep in my guts, as the fist low tremble of sound drifts out of the darkness. The hairs on my arms rise up, as if I am about to be struck by lightning, and I can feel my eyes push back into my sockets slightly at the first subaudible rumbles from the speakers.


Gradually, sound accumulates in the mostly deserted club, sounding more like gathering thunder than music. The sound builds into an abstracted storm so loud, and intense, and beautiful that the audience feels it physically as much as hears it. There in the darkness everything stops. We do not think about what we are experiencing, or what we have experienced, or what we will experience; there is only darkness and sound and a blissful, all-consuming immediacy. It is as if Hecker's music has somehow become fully manifest; a conjured entity moving through us, devouring us.


When Hecker finishes his set, he vanishes without ever giving us a good look at him. When the lights come back on, it is like waking up from anesthesia; one snaps back to reality disoriented, as if no time whatsoever has passed, as if whatever just happened took place on a different plane of reality. The people around me look stunned, like they have just been in a car accident, and I am sure that I look no better. I will ruminate over Hecker's set a great deal over the course of the weekend and in the days that follow, wondering how it is possible for sound alone to be so obliterating and so magical.

Soul-sucking heat permeates Raleigh by midday, leaving me feeling lethargic and surly. I decide that it would be best for me to return to Kings Barcade to catch another Thurston Moore appearance, enjoy the other artists that will be accompanying him this afternoon, and drink plenty of cold beer. This afternoon's music comprises several artists culled from Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label, and each band provides an enjoyable if somewhat underwhelming experience. Both Sunburned Hand of the Man and MV & EE offer spaced-out, pleasant psychedelia that cools my mind and wets my musical appetite, even if neither is particularly intense nor show stopping. There is very cold, inexpensive beer, relaxed atmosphere, and air-conditioning; I feel myself unwind and get into the festival mood.


By the time late afternoon arrives, and Thurston Moore takes the stage once again, I am more than ready for his signature guitar squealing and rhythmic violence. Moore is joined by his drummer from yesterday, as well as harpist Mary Lattimore. Their set is every bit as vibrant and blistering as his short set of the day before, but intensified by the merciless shredding of the formidable Lattimore. The crowd who has joined me today is distinctly Caucasian and well dressed, all in their late '20s and '30s; hipsters and grad students from Duke and Chapel Hill. I could be in one of the über-chic, exclusive clubs that I loathe in Seattle, or in San Francisco somewhere. Am I still in the South? Why are my Southern stereotypes not being catered to? Have the last vestiges of regional identity withered away in this odious heat?


For reasons that are too complex and unimportant to explain here, I have never gotten around to listening to St. Vincent's music. The apparently very popular St. Vincent is this evening's main stage headliner, and I am resolved to braving this foul oven of an evening to witness her set. She collaborated on a record with David Byrne, so she must be pretty cool, right? The several block area in downtown Raleigh that comprises the main stage is thronged with teenagers, families, and people selling various things. I have been to festivals that are far, far more claustrophobically crowded than the one I am traversing now, but the surplus of people still makes me agitated.


The folks at New Belgium Brewing have taken over the beer vending here at the main stage. I stand online at one of the numerous New Belgium booths for what feels like decades, and when I reach the front of the line I discover two unfortunate things:


(1) They are not selling their best, most traditional beer here this evening, their trippel. How is it possible that a brewery calling themselves 'New Belgium' is not selling any Belgian style beers?


(2) In order to buy beer I must first obtain a wristband at an unspecified location for unspecified reasons. I am temporarily rendered mute with rage, but upon recovering myself slightly, I hiss like Lord Voldemort, 'Just FORGET IT!' and stomp off in a huff. I am certain that everyone at New Belgium is very impressed by my tantrum and feel a profound sense of remorse at having offended me.


I cannot muster much enthusiasm for St. Vincent. The sound on the main stage batters itself against the surrounding buildings like a fly trying to escape a sealed car window. St. Vincent herself looks pretty engaging in terms of her visual style, and I am sure that she is accomplished songwriter if I were to take the time to become familiar with her music, but I am not in the right frame of mind at the moment. I leave her set before she is finished and go in search of one of the many obscure venues that I have yet to visit in order to see some good old fashioned death metal.


After a fair amount of poking around and asking questions of passing locals, I finally locate the Kennedy Theatre tucked behind a sprawling complex of concert halls, ballrooms, and auditoria. There is some type of formal event taking place in this fancy complex; pretty, highly made-up women and girls stand around taking pictures of each other in ball gowns and tanned, stoic looking men stand in clusters wearing tuxedos. For one glorious, demented moment I wonder if this gaggle of formal-clad southerners are also here to see some death metal. Could this be the true, full-exposed, diseased heart of the South that I have been looking for all weekend? Is The Real South like some depraved combination of a 19th century debutant ball and a Cephalic Carnage show? Was I prepared for something so essentially perverse?


No, indeed. These good, God-fearing people are here for some unrelated purpose. I skulk around the back of the complex and into the excellent Kennedy Theatre.


The Kennedy Theatre is a small, high ceilinged room that was clearly designed for plays, or maybe some chamber music. It is rare indeed to see extreme metal played in a venue like this and I am very pleased and excited. I loiter around the lobby area before the bands get going, chatting with the merch people. I make the acquaintance of the first band who are about to play, friendly local boys by the name of Bedowyn. As it turns out, Bedowyn play a fantastic combination of traditional heavy metal and doom, with a healthy kicker of more contemporary extremity. This is the third very remarkable local metal band that I have seen this weekend, and I am impressed.


Up next are some brawny, no-nonsense young gentlemen from Long Island known as Artificial Brain. After a few days of stony psychedelia, abstraction, and tasteful indie rock, it is satisfying indeed to be pummeled by some filthy, technical death metal. Artificial Brain's vocalist tries on several occasions to instigate a mosh pit by performing the universal hand signal for 'please chase each other around in a circle while boisterously pushing each other and playfully bumping into one another in a display of simulated violence in order to express appreciation for our music' by rotating his hand above his head, with index finger extended, but his attempts are fruitless. Crowds at festivals that feature numerous non-metal forms of music rarely form pits, I have found. We express our appreciation in more sedated, less ecstatic fashion. Although I am enjoying myself at the Kennedy Theater very much, and I would like to stay for the other metal bands on the bill this evening, I have business to attend to down the street at the Lincoln Theater.


Tonight's main event will be a performance by Sun Kil Moon, aka Mark Kozelek, and a strange spectacle it is likely to be. Mark Kozelek is one of the most talented and compelling American songwriters of his generation, and I have been a devoted fan for many years. He is also deeply eccentric, with a notoriously combative attitude towards live audiences. I saw him in Seattle just a few months ago, and his erratic stage behavior, hostility towards the audience, and strange, passive-aggressive sense of humor made me want to hide under my chair, in spite of how breathtaking his music was. At the Seattle show he was playing to a theatre of adoring fans who knew what to expect. Here, he will be playing to a mixed audience of drunken festival goers who may or may not have any idea who he is, or how they are expected to behave; the prospect fills me with foreboding.


Mark McGuire is getting the crowd warmed up. McGuire can seriously wail on the electric guitar, and I very much enjoy his work with his previous band Emeralds, but his solo work tends to leave me feeling unsatisfied. His set is pretty, technical, and sort of forgettable. I await Sun Kil Moon's performance with a combination of anticipation, curiosity, and dread.


Sun Kil Moon's set is not scheduled to start until 12:30 AM, and essentially everyone in the audience is reeling, obnoxiously drunk by this time of the night. When Kozelek and his entourage finally take the stage, trouble starts almost immediately. As the band start to tune their instruments and prepare themselves, the intoxicated masses continue to hoot, converse, and generally cause a ruckus in the manner of drunken crowds at festivals. Kozelek becomes extremely irritated with this, telling the audience several times to, 'SHUT THE FUCK UP!' Predictably, this only produces jeers and more noise from many of the blitzed-out attendees.


I was afraid of something like this; Kozelek is capable of berating even very polite audiences, so a mass of rip-roaring drunk frat boys are likely to send him right over the edge. At this point Kozelek snaps, calls the audience, 'a bunch of fucking hillbillies,' and threatens to walk, right then and there. This produces a flurry of booing from the crowd; these people do not like being called hillbillies. A brief period of chaos ensues and I am wracked with empathetic embarrassment, both for the obnoxious crowd and for Kozelek.


Somehow, Sun Kil Moon manage to pull themselves back from the brink of disaster, playing several gorgeous pieces from their devastating new record Benji. Kozelek engages in some of his typical, slightly less hostile stage banter, complaining about how pretty girls never come to his shows anymore now that he is getting older. An attractive young woman near the front gets off the best line of the entire evening by querying loud enough for the entire theatre to hear, 'What am I? Chopped liver?' The entire audience, including Kozelek, has a good hearty laugh at this, and some of the tension from earlier is dissipated.


Kozelek even offers an awkward, halting apology for calling the audience hillbillies, which only increases my sense of empathetic embarrassment. One thing remains consistent throughout the set, however: Sun Kil Moon, and Kozelek in particular, sound absolutely gorgeous. They run through much of Benji, with the sublime 'I Watched the Film the Song Remains the Same' and the utterly heartbreaking, 'I Can't Live Without My Mother's Love' being highpoints. By the time the set concludes, I am truly exhausted. I stagger back to my hotel room and sleep a sleep of total darkness.


Saturday September 6th 2014



Morning finds me drained, dehydrated, and weary deep into my bones. Multi-day festivals will do that to a person, particularly when lugubrious southern heat is involved. My photographer, the talented and vivacious Katie DeMar, will be joining me today on the last day of the festival, and I am heartened by the prospect. It is a shame that I am running so low on energy today, as the festival's conclusion features numerous metal bands that I am looking forward to seeing.




Things get cooking on the main stage with local boys made good Valiant Thor. To be perfectly frank, I have never found Valiant Thor's proto-metal, hard rock shtick to be all that appealing, but they put on a lively show, and the crowd seems to enjoy it. The much talked about and valorized Death are up next, and I am curious to see what they come up with. Like everyone else, I only heard about Death recently by watching the documentary about them A Band Called Death. Unfortunately, the muddy sound on the main stage renders their music irreparably bass heavy, and their live sound comes across far less crisp, tight, and impressive than their recordings. Afterwards, I speak to a friend who was standing near the back, and he said that he could hear Death just fine, so maybe I was just standing in the wrong place.




Mastodon are tonight's main stage headliner. I must admit that I have a bone to pick with Mastodon: records like Leviathan and Blood Mountain were minor classics of contemporary American metal when they were released, but apparently sometime around 2008, Mastodon woke up one morning and said to themselves, 'Hey! Why Don't we try to sound more like the Foo Fighters?!' This dubious decision coincided with their signing to a major label, and it is hard not to see a correlation. In any case, their stylistic shift has not damaged their careers any, and they continue to be very popular amongst the youngsters. I cannot fathom why the world needs even one Foo Fighters, let alone their numerous clones, but I am clearly a minority in this opinion. Katie and I grab a bite to eat while Mastodon play their set, and at the back of the main stage audience the sound is indeed better. Mastodon's set is professional and clear, and they even play the classic 'Crystal Skull' from Blood Mountain. The majority of their new material is, however, of very little interest to me.


Heat, exhaustion, and generalized chaos begin to take their toll on Katie and me. We are thrust into a series of disjointed, depleting events, which I will not attempt to describe here, that leave us both drained and running on fumes by the time we reach the Lincoln Theatre in time to catch one of my favorite bands of the festival: the mighty SubRosa. The absorbing doom/sludge collective out of Salt Lake City holds the packed Lincoln Theatre totally spellbound, as I suspected they would. With harmonizing vocals that move from clear singing to harsh shouting, complemented by the violins of Sarah Pendleton and Kim Pack, SubRosa are one of the most formidable contemporary American metal bands. Extenuating circumstances and general exhaustion cause Katie and me to call it a night after Subrosa's performance. Mercurial, bewitching, and ever-humid, The Hopscotch Music Festival, and Raleigh, NC more generally, are over for us, for better or for worse.




Did I truly confront 'the Real South' over the course of the weekend? I cannot help but feel a flicker of recognition when I remember that strange moment from Friday night when Mark Kozelek accused the crowd of being 'hillbillies' and they very nearly turned on him. People from the North are inundated with a multiplicity of stereotypes about the South that we generally choose to believe. These stereotypes are basically derogatory and dehumanizing, but at the same time they are often internalized by Southerners themselves. I have seen more than one confederate flag decorated bumper sticker since I have been here that celebrate these very stereotypes. The truth that I confronted in Raleigh during the first weekend in September was shocking in its banality: American regional identity has largely been swallowed up and commodified by postmodern American popular culture, and what we are left with are mainly empty signifiers, coated in a film of sweat and humidity.

Crofton parents create Chessie Jam music festival for kids - CapitalGazette.com


Crofton parents Alexis and Kacy Jenkins were tired of taking their kids to the same old places, like the zoo and the park, so they decided to take matters into their own hands.


The couple, owners of Humdinger Productions, created Chessie Jam, a children's music festival named after the legendary monster said to live in the bay.


'A couple years ago, we decided if we were ever to do our own festival, we would do one for kids,' Alexis said.


The pair created a festival that will feature family-friendly musicians Father Goose, Milkshake, Justin Roberts, Lalabibis, Recess Monkey and Maryland's own Biz Markie.


'We have two children,' Kacy said, 'so we really look for something our kids will enjoy.


'That's kind of what we were going for. Something hip, something different from your average kids show.'


The festival, Oct. 4 at the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, will also include face painting, photo ops with wild animals, an obstacle course and a host of other kiddie activities.


The couple said they received lots of support from local businesses and community members.


'We're going to have the Orioles mascot there,' Alexis said.


They are promoting the festival with radio ads and posters at local schools.


'The response has been amazing,' Kacy said.


Those anticipating Chessie Jam include the Jenkins children.


'Our 21/2- year-old calls it his festival,' Kacy said of their oldest child, Dominic.


Chessie Jam's biggest fan might not be content with jamming in the audience, according to his mom.


'Our son Dominic is so accustomed to going on stage at music venues because he's used to visiting his dad at work, so it's going to be difficult to keep him off the stage,' Alexis said, laughing.


Dominic and his 1-year-old sister Lucia have watched their parents plan the festival.


'We really want them to be involved because we've been dragging them around putting posters up, so we want to show them a reward for their hard work,' Kacy said.


'I just hope they have the time of their life.'


Meanwhile, Alexis and Kacy will be doing the lighting and audio. They hope to produce Chessie Jam again.


'We're excited, we're nervous,' Kacy said. 'As long as the kids are still enjoying it and excited about it, we'll keep doing it.'
