This Fall's Inaugural Global Music Festival in Phoenix Brings the World's Sounds to American Soil

Earlier this summer, we raved about our experience at the Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo, impressed by how it aggregated so many of the world's musical styles in one place. A few weeks later, still inspired, we highlighted the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix for its collection of 15,000 instruments from 200 countries.

In October, these two experiences will clash head on, as the MIM will host its inaugural Global Music Festival here in the States. Set to take place the weekend of October 18th, the festival will include Celtic, Ethiopian, West African, Jazz, Appalachian string, folk, and Latin performances, each featuring the traditional music and instruments of the unique styles.

As a preview, MIM has put together a short (less than two minute) YouTube video that previews some of the artists. The two-day festival will take place outside, with food served up that coincides with the origin of the music. The museum itself will also be open throughout the weekend, and we recommend taking the audio tour, which is one of the more unique experiences we've had at a museum.

While we love ourselves a good jaunt to Asia, we're excited that those who might not be able to travel that far can still get a taste of a global music festival. Things should have started to cool down in Phoenix by mid-October, so it should be a great weekend in the desert for music lovers.
