Silopanna Music Festival ready to rock

The Silopanna Music Festival has had its fits and starts.

But this year, the event that's Annapolis spelled backwards is moving forward with what organizers hope will be memorable lineup of bands at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville.

'We started working on the festival, booking bands in January,' said Erin McNaboe, vice-president of the Rams Head Group, which is organizing the festival.

And attendance?

'We are hoping to see the 5,000 mark,' McNaboe said. 'That is certainly a goal.'

The first time out, in 2011, the festival was scrubbed as Hurricane Irene raced up the East Coast.

A year later, the promise of food, fun, beer and music was fulfilled as thousands turned out for the one-day event.

But last year, the festival was called off because the folks at Rams Head could not put together a 'lineup that we could stand behind,' citing disparate schedules and other music events in the area.

Rams Head promoters hope to recreate 2012's success with a lineup Saturday that has The Flaming Lips, Dashboard Confessional and Matt & Kim topping a 19-act bill on three stages. The show runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Flaming Lips' elaborately staged, psychedelic infused music includes tunes such as 'Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber)' and 'Yeah, I Know It's a Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical.'

The band broke through with its1999 album 'The Soft Bulletin,' which many music critics compared to the Beach Boys seminal 'Pet Sounds.' But it was not until 2009 that a recording, 'Embryonic' debuted in the Billboard Top 10.

Since then, they've had several recordings and many collaborations with other artists like Henry Rollins, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Lightning Bolt and Prefuse 73. Some were released on flash drives inside a gummy bear skull.

The band has scored three Grammy Awards and been nominated another three times. Last week, the band announced the fall release of a Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' tribute album called 'With a Little Help From My Fwends,' featuring Moby, Miley Cyrus, My Morning Jacket and others.

Double the music

Leading into The Flaming Lips on stage will be Dashboard Confessional, a band that has been limiting its engagements since 2011 when frontman Chris Carrabba started a new project, Twin Forks.

Carrabba brings both groups to Silopanna. Twin Forks, which features an American roots string sound, plays on the Lawn Stage earlier in the day.

Carrabba spoke recently spoke about Silopanna, the festival scene and his busy music-making with Rams Head Group talent buyer Brandon Linton:

'Playing with both bands is exhilarating. I have been in bands that are all very different from each other,' Carrabba, 39, said earlier this month. 'Your perform with one band, then step off the stage and have to change your mindset for a whole different thing. But once you see the guys in the other band, you're there.'

He said he has really been putting his energy into Twin Forks. 'It's not a side project... I have been really trying hard to not ride on the Dashboard name. Twin Forks has earned the right to succeed or fail on its own merits.'

He said that is part of the magic at music festivals.
