Music review: Jagwar Ma the standout in near-perfect Meredith Music Festival - Brisbane Times
Afternoon groove: Phosphorescent on stage at the 24th Meredith Music Festival. Photo: Eddie Jim
The Meredith Music Festival organiser's long standing pursuit of an appearance by Jagwar Ma paid off on Friday night, with the Australian indie-dance outfit delivering a festival-topping performance that helped overcome an otherwise limp start to the three days.
Jagwar Ma had been one of the later additions to this year's line-up, which was one of the strongest assembled in Meredith's 24-year history.
But despite the roster of talent, much of the festival's first day felt uncharacteristically flat. Launching with Australia punk legends the Hard-Ons (energetic, but lacking punch on the day) the festival meandered through the afternoon.
Alt-punk: Cloud Nothings at the Meredith Music Festival. Photo: Jim Eddie
Former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan's scratchy vocals worked well with the sunset, but the stripped-back set (with no backing band) did little to kick the festival into high gear.
And by the time doom metal band Sleep left the stage (it had to be your thing), festival headliners The War on Drugs had to work to wrest the crowd's focus back onto the music.
That was within their powers, having delivered one of year's finer records, Lost in a Dream. But for the first half of their set the crowd seemed distracted. A stronger second half - including song-of-the-moment Red Eyes - cut through to a point, though left Fairfax Media wishing it had seen the performance in a more intimate venue.
Sound check: Courtney Barnett and The Lemonheads' Evan Dando perform at the Meredith Music Festival. Photo: Simon O'Dwyer
Thankfully Melbourne Bollywood band (by way of funk and surf rock), The Bombay Royale, brought some much-needed charisma to the Friday - complete with a giant inflatable elephant let loose into the crowd - peaking with songs, Wild Stallion Mountain and The Island of Dr Electrico.
And that groundwork left the aforementioned Jagwar Ma to enjoy the spoils.
Jagwar Ma draws heavily on the 1980s-90s Madchester scene and came to Meredith on the back of 18 months of plaudits. It was perhaps the single strongest set of the whole three days, even if they threatened to run out of steam having landing their best musical blows before the end - Come Save Me, Man I Need, and in particular the driving Let Her Go.
By Saturday morning the scheduling seemed to right itself. New Zealand indie-folk act Tiny Ruins played early despite their high billing, which was a good fit. Other nice Saturday afternoon moments included Phosphorescent's hypnotic Song for Zula, and Cleveland alt-punk band Cloud Nothings' anthem I'm Not Part of Me.
Meredith then leant back on some of its well-honed scheduling devices. Mid-afternoon funk (The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra), was followed by hip hop in the form of Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah - who was a powerful lyrical force, even if the set struggled for focus at times.
Augie March and Painters and Dockers ticked the requisite 'Aussie legends' box. But the high point of Saturday night was Californian garage rocker Ty Segall, whose live sound was fuller than much of his recorded material.
Jamaican ska legends The Skatalites and hip hop pioneers De La Soul played the role of the Saturday night party outfits, with the later a pleasantly sharper force than on other recent Australian tours. Blasting through numerous hits - the best on this night being All Good - they heavily employed many party hip hop tricks (see call and response), which would be more irritating if they hadn't helped invent (or at least perfect ) much of it.
Stoner rockers, The Lemonheads, were saved for Sunday, with frontman Evan Dando using his time on stage to fiddle with amps, complain about the lights, and play four or five vaguely recognisable songs for the casual observer (such as The Outdoor Type, and If I Could Talk I'd Tell You).
They closed the set with Rudderless, which ends with the earworm chant 'a ship without a rudder/is like a ship without a rudder.'
But while Meredith had flirted with that charge early, by the end of the weekend, as it often does, it had again found its way to near to festival perfection.

Meredith Music Festival ends on a quieter note - The Age
On Sunday morning, Melbourne band Krakatau stepped on stage at the Meredith Music Festival to play their biggest gig.
The crowd sitting on the Supernatural Amphitheatre was sparse, and perhaps a little uninterested about the band's big moment - it was certainly not the 12,000-odd-people crush that had greeted more-celebrated overseas acts during the festival's previous two days, and which included hip-hop legends De La Soul and indie band-of-the-moment The War on Drugs.
Sunday is Meredith's awkward half-day, with the regrets of two nights of partying apparent in the crowd shuffling towards coffee stands and food tents.
And by mid-morning, many festivalgoers were already packing up camp sites to leave, even with sets from recognised bands, such as The Lemonheads, still to come (to say nothing of the nude race - the Meredith gift - that caps off the festival each year).
Even so, Krakatau's drummer, Dylan Lieberman, was not complaining about playing the day after the party. And 10am on Sunday, with only a tai chi class preceding them, was perhaps an appropriate time for Krakatau's intricate prog-rock instrumentals.
'The time lends itself to us, and people will come with fresh ears,' Lieberman says before the set.
Keyboardist James Tom also reflected that 95 per cent of the band's gigs were at night, and he can find it an off-putting experience to play in the day with the faces in the crowd so evident.
Last weekend's festival was Meredith's 24th iteration. From modest beginnings of essentially a few local bands playing in a field, it now sells out in minutes, has spawned the sister festival Golden Plains, and regularly puts together a line-up of high-end foreign and local talent.
Also among the bands on the bill this year this was Australian indie mainstay Augie March, prominent Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, and original ska legends the Skatalites.
This was Krakatau's first time at Meredith, either performing or as punters. Lieberman said he particularly liked the ferris wheel - know as the Meredith Eye.
By halfway through their playing time, a small smattering of devoted listeners had gathered at the front of the stage to hear Krakatau's set of new jazz-infused material, eschewing songs from their album Water Near A Bridge.
After their time on stage, Tom tells Fairfax Media they were really grateful for the invitation to play. Musically, they had got 'about 75 per cent of the way there', he said, and had even had a few good 'encore' calls.
But the overall feeling had been 'a bit underwhelming', Tom said.
'But understandable', he adds with a laugh, 'given what people have probably been doing to their bodies for two days.'

Other Voices festival review – spirited Young Fathers lead us towards the light - The Guardian
Before I fly to the Other Voices festival, I receive a call from its founder, Philip King, the musician, film-maker and broadcaster who began the annual event in 2002 and has seen it grown into an extraordinary international music series. King tells me about the rain in County Kerry and the nature of the festival. Then he quotes from Seamus Heaney's The Given Note, a poem about a fiddler on the Blasket Islands who catches a fairies' tune floating across the air and learns to play it: 'He got this air out of the night/ Strange noises were heard/ By others who followed, bits of a tune/ Coming in on loud weather.'
It's rare that a poem precedes a music festival, but Other Voices is a particularly special event: a three-day musical celebration around the streets of Dingle, where a dolphin lives in the harbour and the hills of the peninsula give a greenish, embered glow. The main performances take place in St James's Church and are broadcast live online, but throughout the day music spills from pubs and impromptu venues around the town, rolling on until the early hours.
This year's event gets a rough start when air-traffic-control problems in London, coupled with ferry cancellations across the Irish Sea, delay not only festivalgoers but also Ben Howard, the Fridaynight headliner, who becomes the first artist in the festival's 13-year history to have to pull out.
We arrive several hours late, coming in on loud weather, and are immediately shuffled into St James's mid-way through King Creosote's set, where there is a rapt audience. But as Creosote strikes up My Favourite Girl, any memory of the turbulent journey drifts away.
Other Voices is that kind of event; where most music festivals have a rattle and a restlessness, it has a profound stillness. Part of this is down to the logistics: the tiny church and the fact that the show is being filmed mean there is no getting up mid-set, no chattering or no phone-fiddling, and no picture-taking or strolling to the bar. In this environment, you realise how rare it is to be compelled to simply sit and listen to music - both the familiar and the strange - and how rich and rewarding this experience can be. The effect is quite magical.
Other Voices is also the kind of occasion that unites a diverse and surprising array of musicians, from traditional Irish folk to French-Cuban twins Ibeyi, and Belgian jazz singer Melanie de Biasio to local heroes Walking on Cars, and with the audience of ticket-winners not buyers, there is a sense of real musical devotion.
Saturday begins mid-afternoon, following the music trail around the town, and coming across the Lost Brothers playing at An Díseart, a cultural and spirituality centre. This small, stained-glass chapel is the perfect setting for the Irish duo's delicately crafted songs, with their shades of the Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel. Fans fill the pews and cluster around the doors and halfway down the aisle to listen.
Just as some landscapes grow so familiar you nearly forget how beautiful they are, certain artists can almost become part of the musical scenery. So it is later that evening when Damien Rice, an established talent and Irish favourite, takes to the stage back at St James's. But he delivers a performance so full of wit and passion and anecdote - as well remarkable vocal fervor - that he becomes one of the weekend's great stand-out acts.
The night finishes with the tremendous Wild Beasts, with a set that is tender and sublime and profoundly emotive, particularly in their renditions of Palace and the finale, Wanderlust.
But the event belongs to Young Fathers. Before their set, a tremor runs through the congregation as earplugs are handed out and warnings of bright lights are delivered. They begin with drums so ferocious that the crowd seems to draw back and grow pale, and Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and Graham Hastings set about a performance that is half Holy Spirit and half cast-out demons. There is, perhaps, just a split-second in which one wonders if this church and this festival might have been destroyed forever. What happens next is remarkable: the crowd exhales, leans forward and lets the music fill them. By the time the band storm offstage and down the aisle, after a staggering rendition of I Heard, there is a surging feeling of wonder and conversion, as if in this tiny church an audience of 85 truly saw the light.

Paralympian Dylan Alcott wows crowd at Meredith Music Festival - Herald Sun
Alcott, 24, 'crowd-surfed' in his wheelchair to centre stage to perform a verse of his favourite rap, Protect Ya Neck, with New York hip hop star Ghostface Killah.
His performance on Saturday came a day after Alcott completed a 24-hour wheelchair tennis marathon in Melbourne to raise $90,000 for the Starlight Foundation and Variety Children's Charity.
'The song I listen to before I play any match is Protect Ya Neck by Wu Tang Clan (of which Ghostface Killah is a member),' Alcott told the Herald Sun.
When Ghostface asked for a punter to join him onstage to perform the rap, Alcott asked his mates to hoist him high in the air. The crowd carried him to the stage in his wheelchair.
'I can't believe I got the verse out perfectly,' Alcott said. 'Sport is my comfort zone. Rapping on stage is not.'
Asked if it matched the highlight of winning a gold medal for basketball at the Beijing Paralympics, Alcott said: 'My brother Zac, who loves hip hop as much as I do, told me: 'I've seen you win a gold medal, I've seen you overcome disability, but without a doubt, (Dylan's rap with Ghostface Killah) was the proudest moment of my life.'
Zack added: 'You could play tennis for 100 hours, and I couldn't care less. That rap was better than anything.'
Alcott posted footage of the performance on his Facebook page tonight.
He met his rap hero backstage after the gig, adding: 'I had ice packs on my hands because my wrists were so swollen from playing 24 hours of tennis.'

Meredith Music Festival ends on a quieter note - Sydney Morning Herald

Guilty plea in NY music festival death - 13WHAM-TV
New York (AP) -- A Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to a narcotics charge in a prosecution that arose after an overdose death at a New York City music festival.
Patrick Morgan pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of conspiring to distribute narcotics.
The victim, 23-year-old Jeffrey Russ of Rochester, collapsed at the August 2013 Electric Zoo music festival on Randall's Island.
He had consumed the drug Ecstasy, also known as Molly.
Authorities say Morgan had previously sold pills to other people.
One person passed them around.
Prosecutors and a defense lawyer agreed to a stipulated sentencing guideline range.
That makes it likely he'll face less than a year in prison on a charge whose maximum is 20 years.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 13.

Studio Nomad Creates Mirrored Pavilion for Hungary's Sziget Music Festival - ArchDaily
With their winning competition entry for Hungary's Sziget festival, one of Europe's leading music festivals, Studio Nomad created an installation to draw visitors back to nature. Their mirrored pavilion is a simple approach that creates a powerful experience for visitors, as more than 1200 reflective plastic sheets create shards of reflections which appear to fragment the surrounding forest.
On display for one week during the festival, the installation was meant to be both simple to build and easily taken down. As more and more installations rely on digital mapping, tracking, and LED visual effects, Studio Nomad sought to challenge these ubiquitous technological installations with one that uses only basic architectural tools and elements.
Mirrors became a powerful tool for the design team as they relied only on the natural light and existing scenery of the site. Inspired by the camouflage patterns of WWII battleships, they incorporated a checkered pattern of mirrors suspended from an invisible structure between the trees. The pattern of mirrors allows viewers to simultaneously look through the installation to the scenery in the background, while the reflections of the mirrors serve to fragment their views and create a dynamic visual collage of refracted light.
The resulting structure was a 25 meter long curvilinear wall among the trees, in which visitors become momentarily disoriented while attempting to distinguish the dissolving foreground and background scenery of the weaving structure.

Don't Attend Another Music Festival Without An ENO Hammock - Your EDM
Hammocks have become a staple music festival enjoyment accessory. If you've ever walked through the Electric Forest you know that festival experience is greatly enhanced if you and your friends can quickly hang a hammock and veg out in the beautiful Sherwood Forest. Having a compact, lightweight hammock at your disposal can even get you unobstructed views of the stage while others struggle to see over the crowd. As more weekend-long camping festivals pop up all over the country, the more educated and prepared we must make ourselves to maximize our good times this upcoming festival season. Is a hammock exactly what you need to add to your rave repertoire to augment the best weekends of your life? Are they compatible with the Leave No Trace attitude of picking up after yourself at festivals and leaving minimal footprints on our earth? We took an in-depth look at ENO Hammocks' One-Link DoubleNest Sleep System Hammock through our festival-veteran eyes so we could tell you if they live up to the hype and their price tag.
ENO's Facts About Responsible Hammocking Hammocks generally leave a very small footprint and are prime examples of a minimum impact shelter. The smaller your footprint, the less likely you are to impact existing plant and wild life ENO uses 'tree saver' straps. These are wide straps made out of nylon/polyester webbing that go around the tree to minimize girdling and damage to the bark and cambium layer, which can cause wood tissue death. Never use anything made from a non-tree-friendly material, such as plastic zip cords. Never hammer/screw anything into the trees. Leave No Trace recommends straps with a minimum of 1″ in width. Look for an established, or already existing, campsite to set up your hammock. As prescribed by the Leave No Trace Principles: 'Good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary. Keep campsites small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent.' Don't hang your hammock from any dead trees. You could hurt yourself and alter the area around you if the tree were to fall or break from the result of your hammocking. Even if your chosen tree looks alive, check above you for dead branches and/or fruit that could fall. When you are done, pack everything up and inspect your campsite for anything you could have left behind. Double check all trash and leftover food is packed up and taken with you. Pros
Compact. Smaller than most tents. You can easily pack this entire sleep system along with all of your festival gear.
Light weight. Doesn't add so much weight that it would negate the perks of having it at a fest. If you want to only bring the hammock you can leave the rest behind for your next camping trip.
Set-up is quick and easy to understand for beginners. I have never owned a hammock before and set-up instructions for this sleep system were easily understood and equipment was easy to work with.
Comfortable. Two people can easily fit inside and you still feel stable and safe unlike some other brands of hammocks.
Cozy. Two people can easily enjoy the rest and relaxation of a ENO DoubleNest Hammock without feeling claustrophobic for an extended period of time.
Sturdy. We never felt like the materials or straps would give out even though two bodies (300 lbs) were suspended.
Bug net was easily installed over hammock and design makes getting in and out of the hammock non-cumbersome.
ProFly Rain Tarp was large and easily positioned for optimum sun or rain blocking.
Battery operated Twilights are lightweight and could easily be placed on the tether rope of the bug net or anywhere you would like for a little extra illumination or a little more pizzazz.
You can set Twilights to blinking mode to alert your friends which hammock or campsite to come to in a crowded festival.
Twilight on/off switch is easy to locate in the dark by feel making these excellent for a music festival or in the dark night of the wilderness.
Durable and hardy Hi-Fidelity Speaker encases your cell phone while it plays your favorite song for maximum protection from falls and the elements. Can also be conveniently hung from bug net tether line, a tree branch, your belt loop-anywhere you want.
Cons
ENO's cheapest hammock serves 1 occupant and costs $64.96. This price might seem high to those of us entering festival season on a budget.
I wish it came with a sturdier tether line for the bug net. What comes standard is kind of a cheap string. Pictured below is the $21.95 ENO Talon Ridgeline tether you can purchase separately that looks from pictures to be higher quality and includes an extra overhead pocket for storage.
Is It Worth It? Yes.
I will not do another Electric Forest or similar festival without bringing one of these. I can't wait for my next opportunity to use my ENO Hammock it was so enjoyable. From easy set up to being able to relax and chat with a friend comfortably, everything about it was great.
The ENO DoubleNest Hammock is a perfect fit for a music festival fanatic. It provides leisure, comfort, safety and most importantly embodies the spirit of festivaling because you can enjoy it all with a loved one. It's an essential part of enhancing the experience of music and togetherness we seek.
ENO isn't only a brand that sells high-quality hammocks, they're a brand that also teaches you to care for our earth while you're enjoying your time in it. They preach Leave No Trace and want you to look outside of yourself and care about everything around you. This is a sentiment that parallels why we love going to music festivals. A company that embodies PLUR who also makes top of the line festival-enhancing products has my vote as a staple accessory this 2015 festival season.
I am not the only one who thinks their products are top tier; ENO has also won Outside Magazine's Perfect Things in 2013, National Hardware's Retailer's Choice Award and 50 Campfire's Gear of the Year award.Check out more of ENO's amazing hammocks and cop your own at EaglesNestOutfitters.com
