Life Is Beautiful Music Festival 2014 Lineup Features Outkast, Foo Fighters ...

Life is beautiful and so is live music. Today (June 23), Las Vegas' Life Is Beautiful Music Festival announced its 2014 lineup, calling in some of the biggest names on the live festival circuit for its sophomore year.

Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Outkast and Arctic Monkeys will lead this year's lineup, which should come as no surprise. This summer, Outkast is headlining at no less than 40 international music festivals, Foo Fighters just rocked Delaware at Firefly over the weekend, West headlined Bonnaroo and Arctic Monkeys are among the major headliners at this year's Lollapalooza.

Life Is Beautiful Music Festival is chock full of major acts, with Skrillex, The Flaming Lips, Broken Bells, Lionel Richie, Girl Talk, The Roots and Kacey Musgraves also set to take the stage, in a mixed genre lineup.

Other artists at this year's festival include: The Head and the Heart, OK Go, Alt-J, Jenny Lewis, tUnE-yArDs, Mayer Hawthorne, Neon Trees, The Orwells, Sleeper Agent, Panic! At The Disco, DJ Mustard and plenty of more.

Check out the full lineup on the festival's website , and see the rather melodramatic video announcement below:

The 2014 edition of the Life Is Beautiful Music Festival will take place on October 24 through 26 in Downtown Las Vegas.

This year will mark the second year for Life Is Beautiful, which was headlined last year by Kings Of Leon, The Killers and Beck.

Tickets for the festival will be available starting Thursday, June 26 and start at $199.

The population - over 200,000 people at its peak - would make it the seventh largest city in the south of England, after London, Bristol, Southampton, Portsmouth, Plymouth and Brighton (possibly its nearest relative).

Outkast, Foo Fighters shine at Firefly Music Festival

DOVER, DEL. - The Firefly Music Festival is not for everyone, especially for those that find much of the following unappealing: Multiple days of camping, ironic tank-tops, drinking games, Grateful Dead tapestries, dust, drug dealers, bugs, hydration packs, portable toilets, 30-minute treks from camp to the festival grounds, drinking games, high-waisted shorts, flying glow sticks and bad tanlines.

For the rest of us - and there were approximately 80,000 music fans in attendance, according to Billboard - the four-day music festival that took place from Thursday to Sunday in Dover, Del., was an unofficial kickoff to summer party that was thrilling and - if we're being honest - draining. A friend said her pedometer read more than 25,000 steps on Friday night.

Yes, Firefly - like Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza and the numerous other American music festivals that continue to thrive each year - was a party. But music was the driving force for most here, and festival producers Red Frog Events once again booked a solid, mainstream-heavy lineup that aimed to please the majority.

Due to scheduling and the sheer size of the 154-acre Woodlands festival grounds (which is located next to the Dover International Speedway), it is impossible to see even most of the music acts. I tried to see what I could - from sets I refused to miss to following friends to acts I was unsure of - and took away some observations:

The wait was worth it for Outkast. In April, the reunion I thought I'd never see opened its highly anticipated summer run to tepid Coachella reviews. At Firefly, Big Boi and Andre 3000 - who hadn't performed together live in years before this spring - were completely locked in as performers and partners. Andre, in a white wig and black jumpsuit that read 'Children of the Cornbread,' appeared fully engaged and happy to be there during a set that included hits ('Hey Ya,' 'The Way You Move,' 'Rosa Parks') and favorites for long-time fans ('Hootie Hoo,' 'SpottieOttieDopaliscious'). Big Boi remains a dexterous MC, and an live performed with incredible breathing control. The duo's wide appeal was on display clearest during a spirited singalong of 'Roses,' which I always found silly until Saturday night's headlining set. There was a palpable sense of community and togetherness as thousands sang the chorus in exuberant unison.

Dave Grohl relishes A-list rock stardom. The Foo Fighters are one of the few arena rock bands built for a festival like Firefly, and the band's lead singer was happy to play ringleader. He knew his audience (extra points for a Grotto Pizza shoutout), and how to appease them. That meant a set that spanned the Foo's 20-year existence, from 'Big Me' (which was prefaced with a funny anecdote about the band being pelted with Mentos because of the memorable music video parody) to arena standards ('The Pretender,' 'My Hero'). There was an appealing looseness to it all, too, especially when the band ran through a 20-minute mini-set of covers (Van Halen, Alice Cooper, Van Halen and David Bowie/Queen were all represented).

Girl Talk is still a party worth attending. The luster of Gregg Gillis' mashup music has noticeably rusted since his 2006 peak (the year he released his best collection of songs, 'Night Ripper') but his live show is still pleasure-seeking joy. What can sound cheesy and artless on record takes on a new form when thousands want to carelessly dance until 1 a.m.

Local Natives stood out Thursday night. The California quintet's psych-folk lacked the bombast of other nights' headliners, but the band's intricate composition and rich harmonies reached surprising heights.

Arctic Monkeys remained tight, but slower songs were lost in translation. 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,' the English quartet's first hit from 2006, injected a shot of adrenaline, but things got a tad lethargic when lead singer Alex Turner picked up the acoustic guitar for a run of ballads soon after. Even one of my favorite songs, 'Cornerstone,' sounded like a lullaby in a setting so large. But up-and-down set list aside, the Monkeys were still one of most talented acts of the weekend.

People really like Imagine Dragons, a band whose appeal still remains lost on me. As I left their set to see the exponentially more enjoyable Tegan and Sara, I weaved in and out of fans earnestly singing the chorus of Imagine Dragons' bloated single 'Radioactive.' This was a reminder that Firefly does not aim for niche audiences, but for fans who like a little bit of everything, including Top 40.

Sky Ferriera canceled due to sickness. It was a shame because her confident Virgin Mobile FreeFest from last year shot her near the top of acts I wanted to see.

Other scribblings: Walk off the Earth's hammy performance at the Porch once again proved the market for YouTube gimmick acts is still ripe, Pretty Lights fans show no regard for their shoulders when throwing handfuls of glow sticks, Chance the Rapper is a star in the making, A-Trak's tasteful DJ set was an unhyped triumph and everyone still knows the words to Third Eye Blind's 'Jumper.'

Sunset Strip Music Festival Lineup Announced

The beleaguered Sunset Strip Music Festival announced its lineup today. The event takes place September 20-21 on the strip and will be headlined by Jane's Addiction, who on the first night will play their album Nothing's Shocking in its entirety. That album celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Elsewhere, the lineup includes Australian DJ duo Empire of the Sun, who headline day two, as well as Failure, Cold War Kids, Mayer Hawthorne, and Big Freedia.

Despite having lost money in recent years, the event seems to be going on much as before, at least as far as the lineup is concerned; it's a kinda random assortment of rock, EDM, indie, and bounce.

Nonetheless, there's something for almost everyone, and the Jane's Addiction anniversary show could well be excellent.

The rest of the announced lineup is below.

Saturday, September 20 Jane's Addiction Failure Cold War Kids (Crosses) Minus the Bear Kaiser Chiefs The Birds of Satan Nightmare and the Cat Beware of Darkness Say Say

Sunday, September 21 Empire of the Sun Mayer Hawthorne Iration Big Data Tove Lo Big Freedia We Came as Romans Nostalghia Fenech-Soler

From the release:

Jane's Addiction will be honored with the 'Elmer Valentine Award,' which celebrates the music and icons that have made an impact on the legacy of The Strip. Since launching their career with their first live performance at The Roxy in 1985, Jane's Addiction has continued to influence the sound and artistic spirit of rock and roll on The Sunset Strip and beyond. This year the group is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their ground-breaking album Nothing's Shocking, and original members Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, and Stephen Perkins continue to pave the way for alternative rock bands worldwide. This marks the seventh installment of the award ceremony, where Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine, founders of cornerstone Sunset Strip venues Whisky A Go-Go, The Roxy and Rainbow Bar & Grill were first honored in 2008. JANE'S ADDICTION joins a distinguished list of former honorees, including Ozzy Osbourne (2009) who received the first 'Elmer Valentine Award,' which was thusly named after the passing of original honoree, Valentine. Slash (2010), Mötley Crüe (2011), The Doors (2012) and Joan Jett (2013). The invitation only honoree event will be hosted at the House of Blues Sunset Strip on Friday, September 19. 'It all started for me back when my big brother used to tell me about The Strip, and about the amazing scene where artists like Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison blew people's minds by pioneering a new sound and influencing culture in a more exciting way than ever before. Complete with massive crowds from all over the world streaming through the streets and flocking to The Strip just trying to be part of it all,' said Perry Farrell, Jane's Addiction frontman. 'So when it came time for Jane's to record our first album we told Warner Brothers that before we could even release a studio record we had to make a live record on The Strip, and we even recorded it at The Roxy, because we knew that it had to embody that inspiration that came from the heart of that scene. We are very proud to come from this heritage and are truly honored by the Valentine Award.'

Beck does MJ, triumphant Dragons return to Firefly

Content:

DOVER, Del. - Firefly Music Festival is still a newbie in the pantheon of outdoor music marathons. But it's closing in on you, Bonnaroo: This year's Firefly drew about 80,000, the same number of campers at the Tennessee fest. Some weekend highlights from The Woodlands:

Imagine Dragons return to where it all started

When Imagine Dragons played the inaugural Firefly Music Festival in 2012, they weren't exactly a household name. For evidence, look no further than their set time - 11:45 a.m. Saturday - at the backyard stage, one of the two smaller stages for the first-year festival.

About two months after the group's first Firefly appearance, the album Night Visions was released, featuring hits like Radioactive and the appropriately titled On Top of the World, which propelled the Las Vegas band into another stratosphere of fame.

This time around, Imagine Dragons arrived at The Woodlands as hot as any group on the bill. They also got scheduled in a prime Saturday evening spot on the main stage.

'We played here two years ago on a Saturday morning, and it was incredible,' Dan Reynolds said. 'This time, though, we get to come back and play Saturday evening on this great stage. This means everything to us, and you guys are great for being here.'

Outkast reunion good until Big Boi breaks up the party

Two months after launching a much-anticipated reunion tour to negative reviews at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Outkast pulled together an entertaining show as Firefly's Saturday night headliner.

It's the 20th anniversary of the duo's first album, 1994's Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and while a good chunk of the crowd was actually younger than the album being feted, it didn't matter much: Hip-hop fans were getting their first-ever rap headliner at Firefly and one with plenty of hits.

Big Boi and André 3000 started the set off with 2000's amped-up B.O.B (Bombs Over Baghdad), and went through their fan favorites. Big Boi wasn't on stage for Hey Ya!, which was released on André 3000's side of Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, but fans were, as Andre 3000 pulled a group of women on stage for a dance party. Those fans got a rude welcome when Big Boi came back out after the song was over: 'You don't have to go home, but you have to get the f--- out of here,' he told them.

'I believe that we will win!'

There's no way a little live music was going to get in the way of soccer hooligans' good time.

Saturday's World Cup matches drew fans to the Dogfish Head Brewery tent and Landshark outdoor bar, two of the only spots in The Woodlands for hooligans to catch a match.

It was nothing like the hype surrounding the USA vs. Portugal game that started at 6 p.m. Sunday, though. Organizers announced that they would be broadcasting the game on the large screens on and surrounding the main stage, but not until 7 p.m. - after a set by The Lumineers, who canceled last year's Firefly appearance at the last minute.

Still, the Dogfish Head tent, which is in the eyeline of the main stage, was at capacity long before that. Inside, about 1,800 fans gathered around the 10 screens to watch the match.

Outside, fans like Mitch Skrabacz, sporting a Kyle Beckerman USA jersey, hung out at the main stage after The Lumineers wrapped their set. The Buffalo, N.Y., native was just as excited to see the matchup as he was to see the concert.

'It's a great idea' to broadcast the game, Skrabacz said. 'I'm missing Martin Garrix, but he's right across the way at the porch stage, so I can hear him just fine.'

Foo Fighters turn into a Delaware cover band

Dave Grohl knows Delaware.

After years of vacationing in Rehoboth Beach with his family, the Foo Fighters singer must have noticed that Delawareans love cover bands.

So to wrap up the band's Friday headlining set at Firefly, the Foo Fighters emerged for an encore as a cover band, the Holy S----.

The crowd was treated to a five-song bar band/classic rock encore of School's Out (Alice Cooper), Miss You (the Rolling Stones), Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love (Van Halen) and Under Pressure (Queen and David Bowie). The final song? The band 'covered' the Foo Fighters' Everlong, sparking a massive sing-along.

Covers: All the cool kids are doing it

Foo Fighters set the bar high Friday night with its impromptu five-song set of covers, but they weren't the only ones tapping into the deep well of other artists' hits.

Arctic Monkeys played a bit of Black Sabbath's War Pigs, Sleigh Bells teased the crowd with the intro to Extreme's More Than Words and Imagine Dragons paid homage to Rush with a powerful rendition of Tom Sawyer. And that's not even taking into account the collaborations, including Cage the Elephant jumping on stage with Imagine Dragons to play the latter's hit Radioactive.

The talker of the festival, though, was Beck's funkified version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean - including moves fit for the King of Pop - during his Saturday night set on the lawn stage.

Foo Fighters, Young the Giant learn that bones break

Two Friday acts, Foo Fighters and Young the Giant, had bad breaks. Literally.

Foo guitarist Chris Shiflett played the entire two-hour show sitting in a chair with a broken ankle or foot, according to Dave Grohl, who didn't quite have the details straight. The Foo frontman did know the cause, however: 'You know how you did it?' he asked Shiflett onstage. 'By being ... old.'

Earlier in the day, Young the Giant performed without guitarist Jake Tilley, who broke his arm recently. With short notice, the band's tour manager, Stu Berk, sat in on guitar for the 75-minute set.

Sky Ferreira cancels

Synth-pop singer Sky Ferreira broke some hearts by pulling out of the festival at the last minute, missing her 3:45 p.m. Friday set.

The singer, who has been hobbled with a variety of injuries and illnesses this year, posted an apology on Twitter: 'Sorry I had to cancel Firefly Festival due to being ill. Promise I'll play Dover soon.'

Olympian Shaun White goes for gold with his band Bad Things

One thing Firefly hasn't drawn yet are celebrities - unless you count the musicians.

One of the most recognizable artists at the festival was Olympic gold medal winner Shaun White, aka the Flying Tomato, who arrived a day before he played guitar with his synth-pop band, Bad Things.

The 27-year-old snowboarder, who won gold for the halfpipe in 2006 and 2010, took photos and chatted with fans in the VIP area as Band of Horses performed Friday evening.

Bad Things' self-titled debut came out earlier this year after the band played Lollapalooza last year.

Amos Lee, Hunter Hunted give a nod to 'Game of Thrones'

Amos Lee, arguably the most recognizable act in Thursday's lineup, closed his raucous set with a powerful rendition of the instrumental theme song from Game of Thrones.

As Lee played, the crowd slowly began to realize what it was listening to, reacting with claps and looks of amazement. But Lee wouldn't be the only artist to pay homage to the critically acclaimed fantasy drama.

The Game of Thrones theme at Firefly continued Friday afternoon when Los Angeles indie-pop duo Hunter Hunted came out to a recorded version of the HBO show's theme. If you think about it, Hunter Hunted would be a pretty good name for a Game of Thrones-themed band. Either that or the Rolling Heads.

An eclectic mix of performers played for an audience hailing from a wide swath of New England at this weekend's Granite State Music Festival at Kiwanis Riverfront Park in Concord, and the third annual festival boasted record ticket sales overall.

'I just want to say thank you to Concord,' Executive Director Scott Solsky said yesterday at the festival. 'The city, the residents, the business owners. It's such a great crowd. It's so nice to see all the families and the great people who are out here.'

Solsky said they had sold 1,200 tickets by 3:30 p.m. yesterday, but he anticipated more before festival headliner Lucius performed at 7:30 p.m. The weekend weather was ideal for the festival, he said, with a high of 72 Saturday and 79 Sunday.

Aimee Lockhardt, 25, is a big Lucius fan, and she brought her friends Amanda Dev, 26, and Lilah Cherim, 17, from Dover for their first time at the festival. While they came mostly for Lucius, she said they were impressed by the Sunday afternoon bands, especially the Donkilo! Afro Funk Orkestra.

'I like how all the bands here are from New Hampshire. Even Lucius, their guitarist is from New Hampshire so that's a great aspect of it,' Lockhardt said. 'I'm excited because I didn't know

they had this every year, but I kind of expected it to be a bit bigger from how they were advertising it online. It's really nice though.'

'I thought it would be more crowded, but this is super chill, and I like it,' Dev said. 'I would absolutely come again next year.'

Phil Haskins, 52, said he made the hour-long drive from White River Junction, Vt., to hear the live music and enjoy the atmosphere.

'What comes along with the music is just really good people,' he said. 'You always get this in this kind of environment. There's really good energy: the kids are having a good time, the microbrews certainly are good, and there's just lots of smiling faces and good people.'

Two stages were set up next to each other at one end of the park, and performances continued at 45-minute intervals throughout the weekend. Stands selling food, clothing, art and drinks were arranged along the perimeter and the Kid Zone featured face painting, bubble blowing and an inflatable playground for guests under 16. Festival attendees gathered in chairs and blankets in front of the stage, with a small, energetic group dancing at the front. Kayakers on the Merrimack River paused on the water to listen, and a solar-powered beer garden along the river's edge stayed busy yesterday afternoon.

The Kid Zone was a highlight for Kayden Will and her 15-month-old son Tayo, whose favorite dancing music was the Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki Trio. Will said she wasn't familiar with any of the specific performers, but she came for the atmosphere as much as for the music.

'(Tayo) loves to dance. That's why I'm here,' Will, 43, said. 'I love how kid friendly it is. They did a great job with the Kid Zone.'

Will made the 30-minute drive from Andover because 'it's just an excuse to go to music outside.'

'I haven't found that many music festivals yet on the East Coast that I really like, but I love outdoor music,' she said. 'I think this one could cost a little bit less, for what it offers, but we're having a good time.'

Advance tickets were $40 for an adult weekend pass or $25 for a day pass. At the gate, guests paid $50 for the weekend pass or $30 each day.

Solsky credited his staff and the sunny weather for this year's success. Since the festival is a nonprofit venture, he said half the proceeds will go to local music education programs as well as a scholarship fund. Parker Education was the primary sponsor, and a variety of local businesses contributed as well.

'We've got a really good team this year, and we work well together to make it really go smoothly,' he said.
