Initial Moontower Music Festival in Midway draws a youthful crowd


MIDWAY - Despite temperatures in the high 80s and her all-black wardrobe, Susan Hall was there for every act at the inaugural Moontower Music Festival, dancing the afternoon away just feet from the stage at Equus Run Vineyard.


'I can't help dancing when I hear music - it just moves me,' the Lexington resident said. 'This is great, and I love that they have all of these different types of music out here.'


The Moontower festival is the latest addition to a busy summer music festival scene in the Central Kentucky region that includes events like the Forecastle Festival in Louisville, which was held last weekend.


With an expected attendance of 1,200, Moontower obviously wasn't as huge as the Louisville event that attracted tens of thousands of fans over three days. But LexEffect founder and president Kaelyn Query said hopes are the festival will grow.


Equus Run team leader Adam Lawrence appreciated that the event was drawing a younger crowd to the vineyard.


'We usually don't have so many people under 30 out here,' he said.


The event distinguished itself by offering a variety of music styles, from country to indie rock to pop rock, all to a satisfied crowd.


Victoria Wise and Karlie Richardson, fans of bluegrass and Americana artist Tyler Childers, were up front for his 2 p.m. set but said they were also excited for headliners Moon Taxi and other acts.


'We listen to all kinds of music, so this is perfect,' Wise said.


After his set, Childers said he usually plays festivals focused on bluegrass and country, like last weekend's Buckle Up country music festival in Cincinnati, and he appreciated the chance to be on the bill with artists of other genres.


'We don't get to see each other much, so this is great,' Childers said.


Query said she will let the audience direct how future Moontower fests are programmed, but she hopes to maintain diversity.


Hall just enjoyed the chance to dance.


As Brave Baby started its encore, she said, 'I hope they do this again.'

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- For a third straight weekend, the sound of live music fills the riverfront.



The Macy's Music Festival wraps up Saturday at Paul Brown Stadium. It draws a mix of old school and contemporary R&B performers.



New Edition, Keyshia Cole and Ne-Yo took the stage Saturday.



Friday night's headliners included Robin Thicke, Chaka Khan and Charlie Wilson.



The Macy's Music Festival is the nation's second largest annual rhythm and blues festival.

Flint Folk Music Festival continues for 15th year at Kearsley Park


FLINT, MI--The Flint Folk Music Society has brought folk music to the area for more than 10 years, and it continued its annual tradition on Saturday afternoon and evening.


The society hosted its 15th annual Flint Folk Music Festival at Kearsley Park on Saturday, as a part of the Greater Flint Arts Council's Parade of Festivals.


Performers included Stella!, Matt Watroba and Rev. Robert Jones, The Ukulele Kings, Susanne and Jim, and fan favorite Mustard's Retreat. Refreshments were for sale, and a jam tent nearby let other musicians play their own tunes for anyone who wanted to listen.


Jim McTiernan, festival coordinator, said that aside from the festival, that the society also hosts a monthly concert series from December through May.


Mustard's Retreat has a long history with Flint, from playing in the area as far back as the 1960's, McTiernan said, jokingly referring to them as the festival's 'house band' for how often they perform there. This is the first year that The Ukulele Kings have been added to the concert roster.


'It really encompasses a lot of different kinds of music. The way we look at folk music, there's some jazz, some blues...it's music that really lasts the test of time,' McTiernan said.


Flint resident Rev. Zoe Montae attended the festival with her daughter and her grandchildren. She praised the voices of the members of Stella!, and the chemistry between Matt Watroba and Rev. Robert Jones.


'When you're on a fixed income when you get older, you can't afford to go to some of the most expensive places,' she said. 'It's a wonderful thing that Flint does this for free.'
